This article examines whether there are differences in men’s and women’s use of the Internet and whether any such gender gaps have changed in recent years. The authors use data from several surveys during the period 1997 to 2001 to show trends in Internet usage and to estimate regression models of Internet usage that control for individuals’ socioeconomic characteristics. They find that women were significantly less likely than men to use the Internet at all in the mid-1990s, but the gender gap in usage disappeared by 2000. However, women continue to be less frequent and less intense users of the Internet. The results suggest that there is little reason for concern about sex inequalities in Internet access and usage now, but gender differences in frequency and intensity of Internet usage remain.
abstractWe take a first step towards analysing fundraising on the internet. Internet fundraising allows amongst other things for the possibility of instantaneous feedback on campaign progress. Analysing data from a large number of small scale internet fundraising campaigns we show that the rich feedback information provided to donors alters subsequent donor behaviour. In particular, early donors set a precedent for later donors. We discuss some possible explanations for this phenomenon.

The usage of the internet has been growing constantly during the past years. Similarly, there is a noticeable rise in e-commerce capacity and sales; however the full potential has not reached yet. It is often explained as a lack of trust. Despite an effort put into confidence-building in the electronic commerce, the shortage of trust is still mentioned as the most important reason why consumers do not buy in the internet. The low trust in e-commerce is mainly resulting from risks and uncertainty, which people perceive much stronger in the internet than in traditional stores. On the one hand it is originated from the behaviour of the persons involved and on the other hand it is based on security gaps and errors in the system. Consumers feel unsure just because of the structural features of the internet. Mainly due to the missing face-t...
