Can collaborative filtering be successfully applied to digital libraries in a manner that improves the effectiveness of the library? Collaborative filtering systems remove the limitation of traditional content-based search interfaces by using individuals to evaluate and recommend information. We introduce an approach where a digital library user specifies their need in the form of a question, and is provided with recommendations of documents based on ratings by other users with similar questions. Using a testbed of the Tsunami Digital Library, we found evidence that suggests that collaborative filtering may decrease the number of search queries while improving users' overall perception of the system. We discuss the challenges of designing a collaborative filtering system for digital libraries and then present our preliminary experiment...

This chapter addresses technical issues concerning digital technologies. Radiological equipment and technique are briefly introduced together with a discussion about requirements and advantages of digital technologies. Digital technologies offer several advantages when compared to conventional analogical systems, or screen–film (SF) systems. While in clinical practice the practitioners should be aware of technical factors such as image acquisition, management of patient dose, and diagnostic image quality. Thus, digital technologies require an up-to-date scientific knowledge concerning their use in projection radiography. In this chapter, technical considerations concerning digital technologies are provided.
There is an ever-increasing amount of data being created in digital formats, through the digitisation of existing analogue information and the creation of new 'born-digital' data from the sciences, arts, and humanities sectors. As well as generating new digital data, scientists, researchers, and scholars have begun to rely on digital content created by others. These data are at risk from technological obsolescence and from the inherent fragility of digital media. Digital curation is the management and preservation of digital data over the long-term. All activities involved in managing data from planning its creation, best practice in digitisation and documentation, and ensuring its availability and suitability for discovery and re-use in the future are part of digital curation. Digital curation can also include managing vast data sets...

Digital badges allow language educators to earn credentials for the 21st century classroom and share them with the world. See how reputable badge issuers provide opportunities for educators to showcase their skills and interests with peers and employers.
DSpace is a joint development project of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries and Hewlett-Packard Company. Its mission is to establish a library service to capture, distribute, and preserve the digital, intellectual output of the MIT community. We are developing a software platform for long-term digital content storage and preservation, and implementing this platform as a service of the Libraries.
