Presentation for the Second Annual Digital Frontiers Conference. In this presentation, the authors discuss digitization methodologies, skills, and economic factors relating to the Oklahoma Historical Society.
Digital preservation is emerging as an area of work and research that tries to provide answers that will ensure a continued and long-term access to information stored digitally. IT Platforms are constantly changing and evolving and nothing can guarantee the continuity of access to digital artifacts in their absence. This paper focuses on a speci c family of digital objects: Relational Databases; they are the most frequent type of databases used by organizations worldwide. A neutral format that is hardware and software independent is the key to achieve a standard format to use in digital preservation of relational databases. XML for its neutrality was chosen for this representation of the database. The presented solution o ers a possibility to achieve relational databases preservation. The prototype follows the "Reference Model for an O...
Digital art installations can often gain from the capability of detecting the presence of people observing them. With this information, the artists can enhance the experience of who interacts with their work. While this detection can be made by means of web cameras or sensors, these systems are generally difficult to implement for people with a low knowledge of programming. We propose a system that uses bluetooth to do this detection and allows easy integration with applications often used by digital artists. The system also allows users to interact with the installation using their mobile devices. It's intended to be used in art installations by digital artists who wish to give their audience a new way to interact with their pieces.
This editorial discusses long-term archiving and long-term access to digital documents, with an emphasis on criteria for selection. Selecting materials for digital preservation depends on whether the materials are both valuable and endangered, whether appropriate digitization procedures and standards for these materials exist, and whether copyright allows reasonable access for educational and research purposes.
The characterization of physical properties of digital imaging systems requires the determination and measurement of detectors’ physical performance. Those measures such as modulation transfer function (MTF), noise power spectra (NPS), and detective quantum efficiency (DQE) provide objective evaluations of digital detectors’ performance. To provide an MTF, NPS, and DQE calculation from raw-data images it is necessary to implement a method that is undertaken by two major steps: (1) image acquisition and (2) quantitative measure determination method. In this chapter a comprehensive description about a method to provide the measure of performance of digital radiography detectors is provided.
The majority of today's undergraduate students are 'digital natives'; a generation born into a world shaped by digital technologies. It is important to understand the significance of this when considering how to teach Digital Media to digital natives. This paper examines the analogies to literacy that recur in digital native debates. It argues that if the concept of digital literacy is to be useful, educators must attend to the multiple layers and proficiencies that comprise literacy. Rather than completely dispose of old teaching methods, updated pedagogical practices should integrate analysis and critique with exploratory and creative modes of learning.
Digital Craft is a project that explores the interface between three-dimensional (3-D) computer technology and costume technology. I combine seasoned millinery techniques with modern methods of object construction and design to diversify the costume artisan’s toolbox and encourage practical and useful ways of moving between the virtual and physical world. Through a series of theoretical projects the dichotomy of modern artistic process is explored. The task of this thesis project is to explore the impact of 3-D imaging software on design and construction methods by applying them to the sculptural process of hat making. I collaborate with designers and technicians to develop methods of hat making for performance culminating in an exhibition presented at the University Co-op Cohen New Works Festival, April 2011. This research is...
