We propose a view of strategizing as a playful design practice and illustrate this view by describing a process for fostering effective strategic play. We outline the benefits of the process and address how executives can play effectively. Strategizing through playful design is a useful complement to conventional strategic planning processes and helps to open up and orient fruitful debate about an organization’s particular strategic challenges.
Missile Design (MSLDSN) is a toolbox created to be used with The MathWorks' MATLAB® interactive computing environment, version 4.2. MSLDSN provides the missile deSigner with a number of tools to aid in establishing and evaluating missile parameters during the conceptual phase of design. MSLDSN aids the designer in establishing an initial configuration which is then refined using the various missile programs (e.g .• Missile Datcom). MSLDSN is limited to designing solidpropellant- powered, tail-controlled air-ta-air missiles with triangular planform fins in a cruciform arrangement.
This booklet is a guide to literature on architectural design and energy saving. A number of essential terms and problems are brought into discussion. The influence and responsibilities of the architects is specially underlined. The target groups are both practitioners and students.
Although thousands of books and articles have been written on organizational strategy, there is very little that can be used to help us actually create or generate organizational strategy. Gary Hamel (1998, p. 3) was correct when he said, “Anyone who claims to be a strategist should be intensely embarrassed by the fact that the strategy industry doesn’t have a theory of strategy creation!” Almost 20 years later, the strategy industry still has no widely accepted theory, methods or tools for strategy creation … until now. In this paper I illustrate how to use many of the principles, processes and tools of the design profession to create innovative organizational strategies that can help organizations stand out from the pack.
ABSTRACT The thesis aims at developing conceptual and methodological tools in order to adapt sound in a “designerly” way within the discipline textile design. Occupational groups working with sound are to a large extent problem driven. This implies knowledge regarding sound and sound design mostly focuses on defensive strategies, not creative possibilities. The ambition with this research project is to make suggestions how textile designers can work practically with textile sound design, in a more nuanced way. /br As a starting point the thesis describes commonly used methods and processes used in the design process within an industrial context, followed by a more thorough analyze of the textile design process. These studies constitute a foundation to make it possible to see in what way these methods and processes will be affected whe...
Building is an important enterprise concerning sustainable development. In order to contribute to the transformation, designers have to learn from existing building, not least successful demonstration projects. However, although findings on how to deal with for example the environmental effects have been available for a long time, the rate of implementation is alarmingly low. This paper is part of a research project that approaches the issues of sustainable architecture through contemporary design theory. The aim is to reach both a theoretical development and improved methodologies for implement ting sustainable strategies in integrated building design. The paper is a result of the initial phase in the project. It has been carried out through literature studies in design theory, discourse theory and “ecological” design. The investigat...
The fundamental methodology of design is based on the ability to imagine "what could be" - a subjective position based on the "suspension of disbeleif". The basic premise of digital tools, parametric design, and at the core logic, is fundamentally objective. How do designers negotiate the gap between these two sides of thier profession, and how is emerging technology affecting thier ability to be both objective and subjectively creative in the digital age.
Computer-based techniques for Environmental design tend to be analytical. They are aimed at the Engineer who takes a previously designed building and then analyses the environmental performance of the building so as to be able to give performance requirements for servicing plant. Thus the building has been designed by an architect using experience and some broad background knowledge of environmental performance, but it is usually not until the analysis stage is reached that the building's environmental performance is accurately assessed. A sunlight design program (application) has been written to address this problem. This program is aimed at the designer and should allow them to assess quickly the sunlight characteristics of their building. The intention has been to produce a tool which is easy to understand and use: a tool which is i...
Methodology describing the design of the academic hospital Gasthuisberg - Leuven (Belgium). Starting at the one end from the masterplan, and from the functional activities at the other end, it is shown how to decide about the structure of the building. Subsequently a T-shaped nursing unit is designed in detail.
Key elements of chicken coop design for the backyard and small flock producer are in this short, concise, and easy-to-read publication. Topics include tips for protecting chickens from predators, coop size, ventilation, and maintenance, as well as details for roosting poles and nest boxes.
