Sustainable Product Design is currently accepted as one of the most promising trends in the “Sustainable Development” movement. It is often seen as a facilitation tool to implement Sustainability in practice, by improving the life cycle and eco-efficiency of products, by promoting dematerialization and by proposing completely new innovative sustainable solutions, services and products which encourage and communicate new “Sustainable Life Styles and Scenarios” and that can both stimulate the economic competitiveness of local industries and promote a more sustainable consumption [1]. In this context cork, a natural, recyclable, non-toxic, renewable resource, with outstanding environmental qualities, incorporating a high potential of innovative technological characteristics, can play a relevant role. Cork is a versatile raw material which...
While sustainability in Design finds much attention in the literature, the education of sustainability in Design courses lacks discussion regarding curricula and importance. In an attempt to map the way sustainability is taught in Design Bachelor and Master Courses in the European Union, we began analysing faculties from a number of EU countries and present the initial results in the form of graphics, and, in addition to that, we discuss curricular contents. Furthermore, we looked at the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014 – an initiative that comprehends the UNECE region (that includes several EU member states), which has contributed to publications related to Design and sustainability, in order to understand how it has been (and can be)supporting the education of sustainability in Design. The purp...
The research presented in this thesis deals with gradient-enhanced approximate design optimization. This research has been carried out as part of the ADOPT project (Approximate Design OPTimization), a joint STW project with the Eindhoven University of Technology. In structural optimization, sensitivity analysis is often performed by means of the semi-analytical method. In the present thesis it has been shown that the accuracy of the design sensitivities can be improved by using Laplacian smoothing instead of a boundary node approach. In many applications of structural optimization, sensitivity information is available at low computational cost. Various methods to include this information in the response surface method have been investigated. It has been shown that including gradient information in the response surface may be considered...
The city of Cleveland runs an annual design competition open to practitioners worldwide with the view of enhancing the profile and regeneration of their post industrial city. The 2011 competition asked for a new school vision for a site adjacent to the main Cleveland State University's downtown campus. The proposal submitted by Michael Dickson seeks to act as a catalyst for the regereration of the community by opening up the school to the commuinity through the creation of shared public spaces and activities. Learning opportunities are identified and enhaced at the interface between school and community which are manifested through student run commercial gallery spaces, community build projects, student run cafe and weekly markets. In response to the industrial identity and at time hostile climate, the main classroom areas are configur...
Product Sound Design is an elective course of the Master of Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. The educational goal of the course is to make students consciously aware of constructive parts in the design of appliances. The paper details the experience and the design of product sounds. The course runs during the second half year and the students are involved through project teams. Products have mostly moving parts with a certain mass that generate sounds. Clearance is the result of tolerances of two fitted parts and the quality of manufacturing these parts. Two types of sounds can be distinguished: intentional sounds and consequential sounds. In product sound design an integrative vision of perception and engineering is needed to be a successful designer/engineer of products. The content of the product ...

This thesis explores the role of interpretation in design activity through the development of a computational model of constructive interpretation. It asks the question: how does the construction of interpretations from expectations within a situation affect design activity? This work hypothesises that designers construct their world from their expectations through interpretation. In interpreting their own work designers are able to make unexpected discoveries and explore the implicit knowledge held within their expectations of the world. These expectations are grounded in experience. A conceptual model for constructive interpretation is described. Knowledge held by designers is represented in a perceptual symbol system, in which knowledge organised in a hierarchy. Within this hierarchy, higher layers represent an increased level of ab...
