Unfortunately, these methods are inaccessible to practicing professionals due to constraints on time and location. It emphasises the requirement for developing various design information support systems for the world market. The design exploration method for adaptive design systems is developed to facilitate the pursuit of a balance between the efficiency and accuracy in systems engineering design. The proposed method is modified from an existing multiscale material robust design method, the Inductive Design Exploration Method (IDEM). The IDEM is effective in managing uncertainty propagation in the model chain. However, it is not an appropriate method in other systems engineering design outside of original design domain due to its high computational cost. The concept of open innovation is becoming an increasingly popular topic of interest and seems to promise a lot in organizational development. However, to date there are no certain design principles that can be followed by organizations on how to use open innovation successfully. In this paper seven design principles of open innovation concept have been proposed. The derived principles are the outcome which is based on the principles of universal design. The open innovation design, based on these principles could create better business values and new business strategies. Finally a theoretical framework is also proposed.
Companies are under increasing pressure to develop new products more effectively and efficiently. In order to meet this challenge, the organisation of the new product development process has received ample attention both in the academic literature and in the practitioner literature. As a consequence, a myriad of methods to design new products has been developed. These methods aim at facilitating concurrent product design and engineering. However, it is only recently, through the advent of families of novel design technologies, that concurrency really becomes possible. In this chapter, recent research insights on the impact of these design technologies on the product development process are reported and discussed.
This subject teaches students, having an initial interest in sailing design, how to design good yachts. Topics covered include hydrostatics, transverse stability, and the incorporation of the design spiral into one's working methods. Computer aided design (CAD) is used to design the shapes of hulls, appendages and decks, and is an important part of this course. The capstone project in this course is the Final Design Project in which each student designs a sailing yacht, complete in all major respects. The ever-increasing complexity of design processes fosters novel design computation models to be employed in architectural research and design in order to facilitate accurate data processing and refined decision making. These computation models have enabled designers to work with complex geometry and numeric design constraints to explore a whole new design field that is impossible to explore without computation techniques.
