This research project is about how and what the product design approach of Industrial Design Engineering can contribute to that of another area and in particular to software design. The company who gave the brief is Exact Software in Delft. The purpose of this project is to understand the value of the ‘design approach’ that is taught in the course of the IDE program. The alumni of IDE are not all typical product designers, they tend to work in a variety of areas other than IDE. A research with a focus to assess the value of the design approach learned at IDE will help to understand how and what IDE can contribute to areas other than product design. The physical environments in which design collaborations take place provide many affordances, which enable interactions to occur both seamlessly and (in most cases) successfully. Physical collaboration is also facilitated through many aspects of the design process. Virtual design collaboration on the other hand, while successful at achieving the direct repre-sentation of activity around the artefacts being manipulated, lacks many of the physical affordances which make collaboration in the physical realm successful. The aim of this paper is to present the physical affordances of design interaction, isolate those which aid the success of physical design and identify which factors are potentially beneficial to improve the affordances of virtual collaborative design environments
iSchools have a well-established reputation for rigorous analysis, applying a range of multidisciplinary methods. However, increasingly many of us are teaching design elements as well as doing design in our research. We believe that as iSchools, we have a unique perspective, or accent, on design activities, which comes from our history of studying not just the design of information systems and how people use them, but from taking a step back and studying the information behavior of individuals and groups, thus taking a more holistic view of design. The purpose of this paper is to integrate the controller design of wind turbines with structure and aerodynamic analysis and use the final product in the design optimization process (DOP) of wind turbines. To do that, the controller design is automated and integrated with an aeroelastic simulation tool. This integrated tool is linked with an optimization engine. The automated controller has two built-in control algorithms; a generator-torque controller and an above rated pitch-controller. This new tool is used in the DOP of the 5MW NREL research wind turbine. This thesis illustrates that everyone deserves great design and suggests methods on how to achieve it. A new mindset for product design is developed and presented here advocating for incentives, both economic and humanitarian, in order to create more equitable products around the world for people without discriminating based on traditional geographic, economic, or cultural stereotypes. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to connect two discourses, the discourse of cybernetics and that of design. Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes a comparative analysis of relevant definitions, concepts, and entailments in both discourse, and an integration of these into a cybernetically informed concept of human-centered design, on the one hand, and a design-informed concept of second-order cybernetics, on the other hand. In the course of this conceptual exploration, the distinction between science and design is explored with cybernetics located in the dialectic between the two.
