The visual representation of transience, through the exploitation of the symbolic potential of objects in the genre widely known as still life, has preoccupied artists throughout Western art history. The still life genre is being interrogated and reinvented by contemporary photo media artists, as photography has a unique connection with still life and death, due to its ability to arrest time and literally still life. Mellon Foundation Today, indigenous communities throughout North America are grappling with the dual issues of language loss and revitalization. While many communities are making efforts to bring their traditional languages back through educational programs, for some communities these efforts are not enough or have come too late to stem the tide of language death, which occurs when there are no remaining fluent speakers and the language is no longer used in regular communication. Controlled cell death, or apoptosis, occurs in response to many different environmental stimuli. The apoptotic cascade that occurs within the cell in response to these cues leads to morphological and biochemical changes that trigger the dismantling and packaging of the cell. Caspases are a family of cysteine-dependent aspartate-directed proteases that play an integral role in the cascade that leads to apoptosis. Caspases are grouped as either initiators or effectors of apoptosis, depending on where they enter the cell death process. Prior to activation, initiator caspases are present as monomers that must dimerize for full activation whereas effector caspases are present as dimeric zymogens that must be processed for full activation. The final stage of cell division (mitosis), involves the compaction of the duplicated genome into chromatid pairs. Each pair is captured by microtubules emanating from opposite spindle poles, aligned at the metaphase plate, and then faithfully segregated to form two identical daughter cells. Chromatids that are not correctly attached to the spindle are detected by the constitutively active spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC). Any stress that prevents correct bipolar spindle attachment, blocks the satisfaction of the SAC, and induces a prolonged mitotic arrest, providing the cell time to obtain attachment and complete segregation correctly. Programmed cell death (PCD) in bacteria plays an important role in developmental processes, such as lysis of the mother cell during sporulation of Bacillus subtilis and lysis of vegetative cells in fruiting body formation of Myxococcus xanthus. The signal transduction pathway leading to autolysis of the mother cell includes the terminal sporulation sigma factor EςK, which induces the synthesis of autolysins CwlC and CwlH. An activator of autolysin in this and other PCD processes is yet to be identified. Autolysis plays a role in genetic exchange in Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the gene for the major autolysin, lytA, is located in the same operon with recA.
