The Orange Chair is divided into five sections, in which the main themes of selfhood and identity are explored through phases of development, complication, fragmentation, reorganization, and the achievement of wholeness. These phases correspond with the narrator's struggle with the prospect of death as a result of a life-threatening illness and its demoralizing effects. The narrator uses myth, his identification with elements of nature, and the resources of imagination and language to reconstruct his identification with living things and an empowered place in the world.^ The poems are written in a variety of contemporary free verse forms.
