ALICE is the only LHC experiment dedicated to the study of the Quark‐Gluon Plasma (QGP) which is expected to be created in heavy‐ion collisions. Among the most promising observables, heavy quarkonia provide an essential probe for the characterization of the QGP thanks to their sensitivity to the earliest and hottest stages of the collision. Quarkonia measurement can be performed in the dimuon decay channel with the ALICE muon spectrometer in the forward rapidity region. The ALICE muon spectrometer consists of 5 tracking and 2 trigger stations, a set of absorbers and a dipole magnet. It has been commissioned by means of cosmic rays and the first LHC beam injections in 2008 and has shown good performances for muon detection. This paper presents the beam test results of the first four double-sided silicon strip modules built for the inner tracker of ALICE detector. The basic detector performance was studied with the focus made on the efficiency and spatial resolution determination. A fast method for the determination of the spatial resolution of the sensors in the telescope is described.
ALICE (a large ion collider experiment) is the LHC experiment dedicated to the study of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The ALICE muon spectrometer covers a large range in pseudo-rapidity and is designed to study quarkonia and heavy flavours decaying into (di-)muons. The high particle multiplicities environment in such collisions require a specific, fast and efficient trigger system, the muon trigger. It consists of four planes of RPC detectors, covering an area of 36 m2 each, 21k front-end channels and a fast-decision electronics. The muon trigger is designed to reconstruct (muon) tracks and deliver a trigger signal each 25 ns (40 MHz) with a total latency of 800 ns. The two outermost layers of the ALICE Inner Tracking System consist of 1698 double-sided silicon microstrip modules, which form the Silicon Strip Detector (SSD). The SSD modules offer several novelties, which include the use of TAB-bonding technique for the connection of the front-end electronic via thin aluminium-polyimide cables. The module as well as its parts will be described and the assembling procedure illustrated.
We investigate the computational complexity of two maze problems, namely rolling block and Alice mazes. Simply speaking, in the former game one has to roll blocks through a maze, ending in a particular game situation, and in the latter one, one has to move tokens of variable speed through a maze following some prescribed directions. It turns out that when the number of blocks or the number of tokens is not restricted (unbounded),then the problem of solving such a maze becomes PSPACE-complete. Hardness is shown via a reduction from the nondeterministic constraint logic (NCL) of Demaine and Hearn to the problems in question. In this way we improve on a previous PSPACE-completeness result of Buchin and Buchin on rolling block mazes to best possible. The muon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment is a dedicated device to study heavy quark production in heavy ion collisions via their decay into muons. After more than 10 years of R&D and production, all large pieces of the muon spectrometer are installed in the ALICE experimental hall, while all detectors and their electronics are almost ready for installation.
