The health system in Uganda has undergone a number of changes since independence in 1962 and the PHC concept was a timely innovation, and very welcome in Uganda. And also as a response to the global economic decline of the 1970s and 1980s, the World Bank and IMF introduced Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) in some developing countries and accordingly a package of reforms was proposed to address problems in the health sector, and these were called health sector reforms (HSR). Both PHC and HSR have faced similar and dissimilar challenges.
The number of eggs and mobiles (immatures and adults) of Amblyseius manihoti on entire plants was determined during a 10-month period in a cassava field located in the Bahia region of Brazil. Observed percentages of eggs, immatures and adults were compared to theoretical stable age distributions ( 58 % for eggs, 24 % for immatures and 18 % for adults). These comparisons served as a basis to discuss the influence of fecundity, mortality and migration on the age structure of populations.
Insecticidal δ-endotoxins of Bacillus thuringiensis, Cry IA (a, b and c) were prepared from over-expressing cells of Escherichia coli and bioassayed against the third instars (6-day-old) of the spotted bollworm, Earias vittella Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), using artificial diet. The median lethal concentration (LC50) values were calculated for 6 days of exposure to δ-endotoxins. Cry IA(c) was found to be the most toxic (LC50, 141.2 ng/cm2) followed by Cry IA(a) and Cry IA(b) with LC50 values of 224.5 and 300.5 ng/cm2 respectively. A highly significant reduction in larval weight took place in the surviving larvae treated with sub-lethal doses of the insecticidal crystal proteins. RÉSUMÉ Les delta-endotoxines insecticides de Bacillus thuringiensis, Cry IA (a, b et c) ont été obtenues à partir de cellules d'Escherichia coli ayant...
This research examines an initiative of the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The CCR program, typical of many ‘cadre’ school mediation projects around the world, involved intensive training and follow-up support for teams of peer mediators and adult advisors at several urban elementary schools. Qualitative and quantitative data , analyzed in light of scholarly literature, indicate that such programs can significantly improve the average 8-11 year old students’ (not only the mediators’) understanding of and inclination to use nonviolent conflict resolution, and also their engagement and capacity to achieve in school. To develop equitable, effective, and sustainable programs required specific commitments from administrators and other school staff, which are outlined in the paper.
