The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of the Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) programme in South Africa, using Mpumalanga as focal area, with the view of developing guidelines to assist service providers in the implementation of the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy (CTOP), Act 92 of 1996. The study was conducted in two phases. In phase 1, a qualitative, quantitative, contextual, explorative, descriptive and case study research design was utilised. Compensation is a discretionary concept whose determinants may not necessarily be the same in all organisations. This study reports on the extent to which a limited number of determinants of compensation, as identified in this study, namely job performance, external equity, job families, organisational tenure and employee skill, predict employee compensation in an organisation. A convenience sample was drawn from the target population in the Gauteng area. Three small and medium-sized organisations were included in the sample, which consisted of a state-owned organisation in the aviation sector, a parastatal company in the finance development sector, and a private company in the banking sector. Estimation of the instantaneous frequency- and time-varying amplitude along with their derivatives is considered for a harmonic complex-valued signal given with an additive noise. Asymptotic minimax lower bounds are derived for the mean-squared errors of estimation provided that the phase and amplitude are arbitrary piece-wise differentiable functions of time. It is shown that these lower bounds are different only in constant factors from the optimal upper bounds of mean-squared errors of estimates given by the generalized local polynomial periodogram. The time-varying phase and amplitude are derived which are `worst', respectively, for estimation of the instantaneous frequency, amplitude and their derivative. This research project is the first phase of a larger study aimed at describing and exploring the cost-effective utilisation of nursing personnel in old age homes in South Africa. The aim in the first phase was to describe the composition of the residents and nursing personnel of old age homes in South Africa. An exploratory and descriptive survey was conducted and the data was collected by means of a questionnaire. The questionnaire also included data on the financial implications of utilising professional nursing personnel to manage the care of the frail residents/older persons in old age homes in South Africa. The questionnaires were mailed to 612 old age homes published in the Hospital and Nursing Yearbook of 1997 (100% sample). This article is based on joint research, between academics from South Africa and Sweden, comparing the influence of South African and Swedish teachers' attitudes towards the practical application of inclusive education (IE) in the classroom. The aim of the study was to identify and investigate problem areas pertaining to teachers' attitudes to IE. Attitudes often relate to interaction with others. This study departs from Festiger's theory of cognitive dissonance, which deals with the influence of people's attitudes and attitude change. In this research teachers from South Africa and Sweden completed the same questionnaire on perceptions pertaining to IE in their school system. In this paper we consider the fair pricing of single stock futures (SSFs) and the effect of dividend risk on the dividend compensation component in the pricing formulas. SSF valuation is subject to the pricing of discrete cash dividends (not percentages or dividend yields) in the underlying stock. Discrete cash dividends present modelling challenges which are not present when dividends are in the form of yields or percentages. Problems are created for market-makers and investors when the actual cash dividend is different from that predicted by analysts and used for pricing. We propose a new model for the fair price of a single stock futures contract which addresses dividend uncertainty.
This article represents a South African contribution to the growing international body of knowledge on histories of community psychology. We trace the early antecedents of social-community psychology interventions and describe the social forces and academic influences that provided the impetus for the emergence and development of community psychology in South Africa. We then draw on various sources, including undocumented small histories of organized groups and individuals, to present on account of the emergence, development, and focus of community psychology in South Africa. We also very briefly describe community-focused work in other selected African countries.
