Análise da proposta de Orlando Vitorino para a organização do ensino e educação em Portugal
The impact of arsenic on human health has led its drinking water MCL to be drastically reduced from 50 to 10 ppb. Consequently, arsenic levels in many water supply sources have become critical. This has resulted in technical and operational impacts on many drinking water treatment plants that have required onerous upgrading to meet the new standard. This becomes a very sensitive issue in the context of water scarcity and climate change, given the expected increasing demand on groundwater sources. This work presents a case study that describes the development of low-cost techniques for efficient arsenic control in drinking water. The results obtained at the Manteigas WTP (Portugal) demonstrate the successful implementation of an effective and flexible process of reactive filtration using iron oxide. At real-scale, very high removal effi...
Parallel corpora are resources used in Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics. They are defined as a set of texts, in different languages, that are translations of each other. Note that these translations do not need to cover the full document, as we might have sentences translated just on some of the languages. When dealing with the process of sharing resources, recent years have bet on the use of XML formats. This is no different when talking about parallel corpora sharing. When visiting different projects in the web that release parallel corpora for download, we can find at least three different formats. In fact, this abundance of formats has led some projects to adopt all the three formats. This article discusses these three main formats: XML Corpus Encoding Standard, Translation Memory Exchange format and the Te...
Completely convinced of the benefits of Perl for the implementation of language processors and after doing a deep review of the state of the art on parser generation in Perl, we have identified a clear need for a powerful tool that accepts attribute grammars and builds compilers in Perl. The ob jective of this paper is to present a solution based on the developing of a back-end for ANTLR to generate attribute based language processors in Perl, to overcome the lack of this kind tools described in the preliminary study referred above. To achieve the intended ob jective, the parser generator tool ANTLR was studied in detail to understand its components and to plan the best strategies to perform the necessary retargeting of its back-end. In this process, the Java compilers generated by ANTLR were analysed carefully to learn the algorithms ad...
The eXtensible Mark-up Language (XML) is probably one of the most popular markup languages available today. It is very typical to find all kind of services or programs representing data in this format. This situation is even more common in web development environments or Service Oriented Architectures (SOA), where data flows from one service to another, being consumed and produced by an heterogeneous set of applications, which sole requirement is to understand XML. This workflow of data represented in XML implies some tasks that applications have to perform if they are required to consume or produce information: the task of parsing an XML document, giving specific semantics to the information parsed, and the task of producing an XML document. Our main goal is to create object definitions that can analyze an XML document and automatical...
There are different definitions for ontologies. Different knowledge areas tend to define ontologies in a different way. For computer science, an ontology can be used to describe, in a well defined and structured way, knowledge about a specific domain. These artifacts store rich information that can be reasoned about, this information can also be target of many structured processing functions. There is a diversity of programs that can be implemented to take advantage of these features and produce applications in every area of knowledge. The Ontology Manipulation Language (OML) is a Domain Specific Language (DSL) designed to describe and execute operations that reason about ontologies. These reasoning operations can be used to manipulate and maintain the current information in the ontology, infer new knowledge or concepts, or even produc...
Apresenta-se, de forma sumária, o Projecto FMI 5000 – Enviromental Changes: Fluvio-marine interactions over the last 5000 years (Projecto FCT no: PtDC/ Cte-GiX/104035/2008).
Most existing programming languages can be categorized as general purpose programming languages, meaning that they can be used to implement solutions for any given domain. They are not, in any way, optimized for a specific set of problems. In contrast, Domain Specific Languages (DSL) are used to solve specific problems in a well defined domain. DSL are optimized to a particular set of problems, but they lack support for a wide range of operations that are required when dealing with real world problems. So, in a perfect world, we would like to implement applications using a general purpose programming language, but use a set of different DSL to handle specific domains' tasks. In this paper we describe a DSL named Ontology Manipulation Language (OML), designed to describe operations over with ontologies. Programs can be written using onl...
