Introduction: many available instruments for the evaluation of balance, fall risk and fear of fallingmeasure simple indoors activities and present a “ceiling effect” in community dwelling elderly. The “ActivitiesspecificBalance Confidence (ABC) Scale” was designed to evaluate balance more thoroughly in several activitiesof daily living with different levels of difficulty. Objectives: translate to Portuguese and culturally adapt to Portugal the “Activities-specific Balance Confidence(ABC) Scale” and to assess its’ reliability. Methods: translation and cultural adaptation of the instrument. Evaluation of an elderly Portuguese populationto assess the instrument’s intra and interobserver reliability and internal consistency. Results: Results showed great homogeneity in most of the compared data, either intra or interobserver. Objective: to determine if in a population of spinal cord injury above D11 patients the use of an abdominal binder(AB) improves or not respiratory function. Material and Methods: it was done a longitudinal retrospective study, and selected all inpatients that were in Spinal Cord Injury Department of Centro de Medicina de Reabilitação deAlcoitão – Portugal - with tetraplegia or paraplegia with neurological level above D11, between the 1st of Januaryand the 31st of March 2009, that have done functional respiratory tests with and without AB. We analyse thefollowing parameters: forced vital capacity (FVC), total lung capacity (TLC), residual volume (RV), inspiratorypressure (IP) and expiratory pressure (EP). It was used SPSS 11.5 and T-student test for statistical analysis. Results:AB use increased FVC (p=0,02) and EP (p=0,004), and decreas...
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease, of the group of spondyloarthropathies. Its clinicalcourse is characterized by high variability, from mild, well tolerated symptomatic presentations to extremeankylosis and major disability. To date there is no known cure. Recently new therapeutic options, such as antitumornecrosis factor, emerged which can affect the natural history of disease. Historically, rehabilitation is a partof the treatment of these patients. This paper reviews the different therapeutic modalities of rehabilitation in the treatment of Ankylosingspondylitis, but also the scientific evidence in literature supporting these different therapeutic approaches. The rehabilitation is part of the therapeutic arsenal in Ankylosing spondylitis. The complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is characterized by disproportionate pain concerning noxious stimuli,as well as sensory, vasomotor, trophic or motor disorders in the affected limb. It´s related to major trauma andsoft tissue minor injury, clinically presenting from joint stiffness and pain, to loss of function. The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PRM) approach is crucial in functional recovery. The authors describe the case of a 32-year-old male with a knee pain that began 4 years ago. He was sent a yearago, after several knee arthroscopies without significant diagnostic findings, presenting quadriceps atrophy, kneeoedema and hyperesthesia, which lead to walking with crutches and professional inability. The patient wassubmitted to a program including joint mobilization and muscle strengthening as well as analgesicelectrot...
Objectives: In patients with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), the increase of the pre-admission inpatient Length Of Stay (LOS) (hospital acute care inpatient LOS in other specialties, before the admission in Physiatry) and the Physiatry ward inpatient LOS can not justify its inclusion or maintenance in inpatient rehabilitation. Therefore, it may not be cost-effective comparatively to ambulatory models. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the pre-admission and the Physiatry ward inpatient LOS in functionality gains obtained by patients with TBI. Material and Methods: Population: Patients admitted for TBI in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) ward between 1/1/1996 and 31/12/2010 (n = 79). Inclusion criteria: TBI; pre-admission inpatient LOS < 6 months; PMR ward inpatient LOS >7 days. Exclusion c...
