Focus by child health professionals on the well-being of young Australian children and their families has intensified in the past decade, with particular attention drawn to the importance of the early detection and intervention of developmental problems. While many children with developmental difficulties are detected in the preschool years, those with more subtle forms of developmental problems are often only noticed by their mothers, passing unnoticed by professionals until the children begin school and fail socially or academically. This study aimed to ascertain ways in which child health professionals may utilise the experience of mothers to improve early recognition and diagnosis of subtle developmental and behavioural problems in children. French philosopher, Roland Barthes (1973) proposed that myths play an important social role...
This paper presents an analysis of the combined data sets from a large ARC (Australian Research Council) funded study on the declining enrolments of female students in high school information technology subjects, and a SiMERR (Science, ICT and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia) study of 9 rural or remote schools in the state of Queensland. The aim of examining the combined data set was to investigate any apparent differences between girls’ perceptions of studying higher level ICT subjects in rural areas compared to metropolitan areas. The findings of the study highlighted some problems experienced by female students studying outside of metropolitan areas. They perceived the subject offerings to be ‘more boring’ than their city counterparts and reported a lower level of home ownership. The paper offers possible expl...
Active control is applied to an L-shaped plate in order to attenuate the flexural energy transmission from one plate to the other. The coupled plates are simply supported along two parallel sides, and free at the other two ends. Point forces are used to generate the primary and secondary excitation of the plates. The flexural wave coefficients are determined from the boundary conditions, continuity equations at the driving force locations, and continuity equations at the corner junction of the two plates. Bending, shearing, and longitudinal effects are taken into consideration at the corner junction. Under broadband frequency control at a discrete location in plate 2, both the control shaker and the error sensor are optimally located to achieve the best control performance. Results show that when the control force and error sensor are ...
Compositional zoning patterns of garnet porphyroblast in kyanite-staurolite-garnet bearing sample from the Devonian Littleton Formation. north-central Massachusetts, reveal complex growth patterns_ Garnet porphyroblast exhibits asymmetric and irregular zoning patterns in Mn, Mg and Ca. The composition of the garnet at the textural boundaries is different for different traverses. and zoning reversals in XMn and Fe/(Fe+Mg) are coincident with development of inclusion trails within the porphyroblast. These observations suggest that the garnet zoning was not only modiljed from garnet-consuming reactions, but also influenced by pre-existing microfabrics through the effects of dissolution and precipitation. Relationships between chemical and textural truncations and garnet growth model proposed in this paper indicate that the zoning patterns...
Phylogenetic analysis of nucleotide sequences from four plastid loci (matK, partial trnK–matK introns, rps16 intron) and one nuclear locus (the internal transcribed spacer of rDNA; ITS-1) was conducted for 14 species of Alectryon and five related genera in Sapindaceae. Both matK and rps16 intron provide few informative characters within Alectryon, whereas ITS-1 provides the largest number of parsimony-informative characters and has the greatest sequence divergence between taxa. Support for branches in cladograms produced in PAUP increased markedly upon inclusion of ITS-1 data to matK and rps16 intron data. Analyses of each region alone or combined produced congruent results, suggesting that the regions are complementary. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that there are two main lineages within Alectryon, with A. subcinereus sister to the...
[Extract] This essay experiments with applying ideas selected from later twentieth-century theory to The Cloud of Unknowing and associated writings. The aim is to discover whether the ideas can shed light on the social positioning of these texts, beyond the insights achieved by traditional textual, theological and literary approaches. The ideas are selected from the body of theory that I know, based on resonances produced when the ideas are read in association with the texts.
The Nurse Practitioner role, a relatively new role in Fiji, was introduced by the Ministry of health in order to increase local access to adequate health care for people living in remote areas. Both developed and developing countries have introduced Nurse Practitioner or similar roles in order to provide a cost effective and sustainable health workforce. This paper provides the results of a qualitative, descriptive study undertaken to explore the introduction of this role and its impact on health service delivery in Fiji. It involved semi-structured and focus group interviews with nurse practitioners, key stakeholders and community members. The findings demonstrate the positive impact of the role and its benefits to people living in the remote areas of Fiji. It also outlines the satisfaction of villagers with Nurse Practitioners a...
Economic models have long been used as a way of organising and presenting information for policy makers interested in large regions - e.g. nations - and recent advances in information technology make the goal of developing models for decision makers in other locales a realistic one. The research on which this paper focuses was part of large project investigating the feasibility and desirability of developing a multi-disciplinary computer model of the Australian Savannas. In the large project, researchers were broken in to three teams: those considering the biophysical, demographic, and economic aspects of the modelling problem. This paper presents findings from part of the economic component of the investigation: that which sought information from key local ‘stakeholders’ about the type of information that would be useful to them. Resp...
This paper highlights the inadequacy of existing research for the purposes of evidence-based PRN (Latin, pro re nata or 'as needed') medication practice in psychiatric settings and notes the absence of relevant evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and policies, both nationally and internationally. The professional, ethical and legal importance of PRN medication practices is also discussed, and shown to add to the urgency of developing a research agenda which will serve as an adequate basis for good clinical practice. This paper summarises the relevant research and identifies problems that can arise for clinicians involved in the administration of PRN medications in mental health settings. It concludes by highlighting key issues which urgently require empirical investigation.
This paper uses postmodern perspectives to demonstrate how, within the growing global discourse of human rights, accepted pedagogies of mathematics conflict with principles embodied in international conventions and declarations concerning children’s rights, particularly their right to participation in all matters affecting their lives. It examines the ways in which discourses of mathematics education produce and sustain teacher-directed approaches to mathematical learning, and considers how such pedagogies compromise participation for young learners. It contemplates reframed educational discourse in which a participant-determined pedagogy of mathematics might more appropriately reflect the discourse of enhanced empowerment for children in the mathematics classroom.
