Palaeoecological and current ecological evidence suggests that species will respond individualistically to future climate change. This is likely to lead to the formation of Non-Analogous Communities (NACs), which may be defined as communities that are different in species composition from any communities that can be recognised at a selected reference point in time. We explore the process of NAC formation, with reference to the key processes of immigration and extinction and the potential influence of landscape pattern, in the context of a metacommunity framework. Background: Occupational allergy to latex is generally reported from occupational groups such as health care workers; however, few reports derive from other occupational settings. Methods: Two male subjects working as loom tuners in a textile manufacturing plant developed severe allergic reactions during the cutting and weaving of elastic bands, initially not suspected to contain latex constituents. Clinical evaluation and lung function tests were supplemented by skin prick testing, specific IgE evaluation and basophil activation assays with extracted elastic bands. Results: Both workers presented with rhinitis, episodes of tight chest and itchy eyes. There is an uneasy relationship between critical criminology and restorative justice. On the one hand, restorative justice is a story of optimism, reform and social change. Yet it also demonstrates a tendency to work within traditional criminal justice systems and whilst doing so, fails to challenge the exclusionary processes of criminalisation. This chapter explores some of the tensions between restorative justice and critical criminology – it is a critique of restorative justice within the context of the unfulfilled possibilities that restorative justice might hold.
Private standards and certification schemes provide an increasingly significant site of study for scholars interested in the restructuring of the agrifood sector. In June 2005, following extensive community consultation, national legislation was enacted to change the boundaries of zones that regulate fishing and other resource use in Karimunjawa Marine National Park in the Java Sea, Indonesia. The new park boundaries included five management zones ranging from notake areas to open access. An initial increase in fish biomass in 2005 was not sustained and by 2007 there was no significant difference in mean biomass when compared to the initial surveys in 2004. Analysis by trophic groups suggested that the re-zoning was effective in protecting the biomass of many fishes. Indeed, only herbivorous fish biomass declined significantly within the park boundaries between 2004 and 2007; corallivore, omnivore and planktivore biomass increased while invertivore and planktivore biomass remained stable. Knowledge of the degree of damage to residential structures expected from severe wind is used to study the benefits from adaptation strategies developed in response to expected changes in wind severity due to climate change. This study will inform government, the insurance industry and provide emergency services with estimates of expected damage. A series of heuristic wind vulnerability curves for Australian residential structures has been developed. Underwater trails are intended as interpretative tools in marine parks, but concentrating divers and snorkelers in defined areas may negatively affect the surrounding environment. We examined spatial and temporal patterns in the effects of use of underwater trails on coral reef flats in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Australia. Changes in benthic assemblages were assessed on two new trails used by snorkelers, two unused (control) trails, and two undisturbed areas. Total percent coral cover, numbers of broken colonies, and living coral fragments were counted 6 months before and 6 months after the new trails began to be used. To demonstrate a model to simulate the risk of weather damage of mungbean, application studies were undertaken using 27 years of climatic data collected at Katherine, Northern Territory, Australia. In terms of the risk of weather damage, the transition from high risk to low risk occurred after mid-February but before 20 March. High quality seed could be expected in 70% of seasons for a crop that matured after 20 March. For planting dates prior to 25 January, the chance of producing premium quality seed was enhanced to 40–70% of seasons by sowing a cultivar that matured 2 weeks later and by harvesting promptly (4 days after maturity).
