Narrative assessment is learner centred, credit based, and illustrates learning and achievement within authentic contexts. It offers new insights into the way in which ability and disability are socially constructed. For teachers, the process of assessing in this manner is enabling them to ‘see’ students, the curriculum, assessment, and their pedagogy with different eyes. They are finding new pathways to personalise assessment and learning for diverse students. This paper will describe a project whereby Education Plus, University of Canterbury and the Ministry of Education have been working with teacher-writers to develop exemplars of learning for students with high to very high learning needs developing curriculum exemplars using narrative assessment in a range of primary and secondary school settings. This approach links closely to t...
In steam methane reforming one of the key reliability aspects relates to ensuring the integrity and reliable operation of the catalyst filled radiant tubes. The tubes experience temperatures beyond 900°C for a considerable length of time, which makes creep the prime mode of failure. Predicting and assessing creep damage rates is challenging for a number of reasons: the alloys are not subject to any international specifications, the tubes are cast and their microstructures evolve substantially in service. These factors are known to lead to considerable scatter in creep life, strain and ductility response. This paper describes the initial steps of a current approach to managing tube life and outlines the early stages of a study aimed at development of a methodology to utilise appropriate inspection in combination with judicious creep st...
The 2007 revision of the New Zealand school curriculum (NZC) requires individual schools to design curriculum to reflect the needs of their local communities through consultation with their communities. For most schools ‘consultation’ has meant keeping parents informed of developments the school has decided. However, Southbridge School has adopted a more proactive and courageous approach inviting parental and student input at each step of the curriculum design process. Regular conversations about learning have enabled parents, students and teachers to work as partners to shape the evolving curriculum. Such conversations closely mirror the action research cycles of plan, act, develop and reflect to show parents and students that their contributions matter. This paper addresses one aspect of this partnership, the students’ contributions ...
The dot intracule D(x) of a system gives the Wigner quasi-probability of finding two of its electrons with u·v = x, where u and v are the interelectronic distance vectors in position and momentum space, respectively. In this paper, we discuss D(x) and show that its Fourier transform d(k) can be obtained in closed form for any system whose wavefunction is expanded in a Gaussian basis set. We then invoke Parseval’s theorem to transform our intracule-based correlation energy method into a d(k)-based model that requires, at most, a one-dimensional quadrature.
Digital Image-based Elasto-Tomography (DIET) is a novel method of determining the distribution of elastic properties within the breast. Using an array of calibrated digital cameras and in inverse reconstruction algorithm, DIET allows reconstruction of the internal elastic stiffness distribution of the breast using only motions at the breast surface. This reconstructed stiffness should clearly show carcinoma based on their high elastic property contrast with healthy tissue. Proof of concept studies are presented for both the callibration of the digital imaging system and the inverse reconstruction algorithm. The reconstruction algorithm identified high stiffness tumors in the majority of test cases, even with the addition of random noise based on expected calibration accuracy.
In July, 2008, the Inaugural Asia Pacific Rim International Counselling Conference was held in Hong Kong. The conference attracted nearly 400 delegates and students and culminated in the founding of a new regional association; the Asia Pacific Rim Confederation of Counsellors Ltd. For this research digest, I would like to draw your attention to three research articles that provide us with a picture of the context of three contributing jurisdictions; Hong Kong, Malaysia and China.
In phylogenetics there are various methods available for understanding the evolutionary history of a set of species based on the analysis of its 4-element subsets. Guided by biological data, such techniques usually require the initial computation of a quartet-weight function, i.e., a function that assigns a weight to each bipartition of each 4-element subset into two parts of size two, from which a phylogenetic tree or network is subsequently deduced. It is therefore of interest to characterize quartet-weight functions that correspond precisely to phylogenetic trees or networks. Recently, such characterizations have been presented for phylogenetic trees. Here we provide a 5-point condition for characterizing more general structures called weakly compatible split systems. Such split systems underly the construction of split networks, a ...
In order to incorporate seismic risk of facilities into a decision making framework, procedures are needed to quantify such risk for stakeholders. Seismic loss estimation methods combine seismic hazard, structural response, damage fragility, and damage consequences to allow quantification of seismic risk. This paper presents a loss estimation methodology which allows various means of quantifying seismic risk of a specific facility. The methodology is component-based and can therefore distinguish between different structural configurations or different facility contents and is consistent with state-of-the-art loss assessment procedures. Loss is measured in the forms of direct structural and non-structural repair costs, and although not considered in the example, business disruption and occupant casualties can also be considered. This fr...
