BACKGROUND: There are few studies on the changes in platelet parameters in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected patients with thrombocytopenia. The aim of this study is to identify these changes and to determine correlations of these parameters with other hematological data. STUDY DESIGN: We studied 49 individuals of both sexes with HIV infection and thrombocytopenia, with an age range between 20 and 64 years old, and also a control group of 49. Complete hematological counts, including platelets, mean platelet volume (MPV), distribution of the size of platelets (PDW), plateletocrit (PCT) and platelet large cell ratio (PLCR) were performed on all patients and controls. RESULTS: Amongst the HIV infected patients with throm¬bocytopenia, we found a statistically significant increase of MPV, PDW and PLCR, and a decrease of for PCT w...
In the last decades significant changes in the manufacturing environment have been noticed: moving from a local economy towards a global economy, with markets asking for products with high quality at lower costs, highly customised and with short life cycle. In this environment, the manufacturing enterprises, to avoid the risk to lose competitiveness, search to answer more closely to the customer demands, by improving their flexibility and agility, while maintaining their productivity and quality. Actually, the dynamic response to emergence is becoming a key issue, due to the weak response of the traditional manufacturing control systems to unexpected disturbances, mainly because of the rigidity of their control architectures. In these circumstances, the challenge is to develop manufacturing control systems with autonomy and intelligenc...
The tocopherol and tocotrienol composition of walnuts (Juglans regia L.) was determined for nine cultivars (cvs. Arco, Franquette, Hartley, Lara, Marbot, Mayette, Mellanaise, Parisienne, and Rego). Walnuts were harvested over three consecutive years from two different geographical origins (Bragancüa and Coimbra, Portugal), for a total of 26 samples. The methodology employed was a normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a series arrangement of a diode array detector followed by a fluorescence detector, allowing the simultaneous analysis of all tocopherols and tocotrienols. The analyses showed that all samples presented a similar qualitative profile composed of five compounds: R-tocopherol, â-tocopherol, ç-tocopherol, ä-tocopherol, and ç-tocotrienol. ç-Tocopherol was the major compound in all samples, ranging from ...
In the manufacturing world, globalisation leads to a trend towards the reduction of batches and product life cycle, and the increase of part diversity, which are in conflict with other requirements, such as the cost reduction achieved with higher productivity. Thus, the challenge is to develop flexible, agile and intelligent management and control architectures that satisfy the referred requirements. The holonic manufacturing and the agent-based manufacturing approaches allow a new approach to the manufacturing problem, through concepts such as modularity, decentralisation, autonomy and re-use of control software components. ADACOR, one of the holonic architectures recently proposed, defines a set of autonomous and intelligent holons aiming to improve the performance of control system in industrial scenarios characterised by the freque...
An initial fragment of a core ontology for the manufacturing domain is presented and motivated. It consists of an ontological classification of ADACOR concepts according to the DOLCE foundational ontology. The ontology is conceptually transparent and semantically explicit thus suitable for information communication, sharing, and retrieval. The system here described considers entities performing the manufacturing scheduling and control operations only.
A total of 26 walnut ( Juglans regia L.) samples from 9 cultivars (Arco, Franquette, Hartley, Lara, Marbot, Mayette, Mellanaise, Parisienne, and Rego) harvested in the 2001, 2002, and 2003 crop years and grown in two geographical origins (Bragancüa and Coimbra, Portugal) were evaluated with regard to their triacylglycerol composition. The methodology employed was reversed-phase highperformance liquid chromatography coupled to an evaporative light-scattering detector (RP-HPLCELSD) after extraction of the lipidic fraction of the nuts. Nine compounds were separated, identified, and quantified. All samples presented an identical qualitative profile composed by LLnLn, LLLn, LLL, OLLn, OLL, PLL, OOL, and PLO (P ) palmitoyl; O ) oleoyl; L ) linoleoyl; Ln ) linonenoyl). Trilinolein (LLL) was the major triglyceride, followed by dilinoeoyl-oleoy...
