Programme notes for all concerts and general information on Klassik Musikfest Mühlviertel 2008
New (and first modern) edition of David Popper's 40 Studies, with an additional text volume of 36 pp containing practice techniques and repertoire references (authored by MR). The 2nd edition contains significant changes in comparison to the first edition of 2004, based on practical use and new research.

Active wave cancellation has the potential to delay laminar-turbulent transition without requiring a large expenditure of control energy, with application to aircraft drag reduction. A methodology is presented for the determination of the optimal location for a synthetic jet actuator used to control Tollmien-Schlichting disturbances with a wave cancellation approach. A direct numerical simulation (DNS) scheme is developed to allow the effect of controls on an at-plate boundary layer to be investigated. Time-periodic wall normal transpiration is used to represent the effect of synthetic jet actuators. An upstream actuator is used to introduce disturbances into the flow and a downstream control actuator is used to cancel the disturbances by anti-phase superposition. A distributed representation of the actuator using a truncated Gaussian ...
Engineering high performance indoor wireless communication systems requires sound system deployment strategies. In order to deploy systems effectively, propagation models that can reliably and yet efficiently characterise radio propagation behaviour are needed. This thesis describes the philosophy, the logical development, and the performance of a mechanistic modelling approach which is intended for use in system planning. In the investigation, the deployment of a single base station in a single-floor office environment is considered. The environment is systematically divided into several generic canonical geometries including an open plan office and corridor, a single corner, a double corner, and a discrete obstacle which are then separately analysed. The dominant mechanisms which govern the energy propagation in each canonical geomet...
There is growing evidence that neonatal and long-term morbidity in preterm infants, particularly those born before 32 weeks' gestation, can be modified by attained growth rate in the neonatal period. Guidelines for optimal growth and the nutritional intakes, particular of protein, required to achieve this are not well defined. Due to delays in postnatal feeding and a lack of energy stores developed in the last trimester of pregnancy, preterm infants often suffer early postnatal catabolism until feeding is established. There are indications that infants born with intrauterine growth restriction have perturbations in protein metabolism. Therefore, they may have different protein requirements than appropriate for gestational age infants. This review summarises what is known about protein requirements and metabolism in the fetus and preter...
In this paper, we analyze the reason behind the use of foreign ownership restrictions on inward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). We extend the results developed in Karabay (2005) by changing the condition on share distribution in the model. Due to this change, we are able to analyze the political economy aspect of this restrictive policy, i.e., we can study the effect of the host government's welfare preference on the optimal foreign ownership restriction. Since the analytical solution to the optimal share restriction policy cannot be specified in general, we use a numerical approach based on collocation to approximate the solution to the problem. Within this framework, under certain conditions, it turns out that the rent extraction-efficiency trade-off is sharper the less the host government favors the local firm. We show that not onl...
Infant and child mortality has usually been looked at in socio-economic terms, while recent European studies have looked at the loss of a parent and illegitimacy as independent risk factors for early death. But did New Zealand’s new migrant population share these risk factors considering the extremely low child mortality rates and high life expectancy seen in New Zealand compared to Europe at the end of the 19th century? Reconstitution of families who had resided in either Tolaga Bay or Little Akaloa settlements of New Zealand from early colonial times through to the 20th century was undertaken and followed through subsequent generations creating a data base of 2379 individuals. As in Europe the loss of a parent as a child did increase the risks of premature death. The younger an individual became an orphan, the greater the risk of chi...
In this thesis, we investigate the impact of transmission on the strategic behaviour of firms competing in deregulated electricity wholesale markets. Assuming uniform-price auctions and locational marginal pricing, we first investigate the properties of the dispatch problem over networks that are constrained and/or lossy. Without loops and losses we derive important results as to how price varies as a function of demand at each node. Whereas, for networks with loops and losses, we discuss the non-convexity of the dispatch problem and show that the optimal value function may be non-convex. We model the strategic firms as Cournot agents, and discuss how the assumptions surrounding the rationality of the agents can influence the equilibrium outcomes. Under a full-rationality assumption, we prove that over a lossless radial network, with f...
