Special Report 790 / Revised January 2000
OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION SERVICE
1999 Oregon County and State Agricultural Estimates Prepared by Sandy Sears
Economic Information Specialist Oregon State University
This report is designed to provide a quick overview of Oregon's agriculture for this past year. The following pages report preliminary estimates for the value of sales and agricultural production for the 1999 crop year. Also reported are revised numbers for 1998 and 1997. Preliminary or first estimates are revised as updated information is received by our office. These published estimates are those reported to our office as of December 29, 1999. Estimates are collected and organized by Oregon State University Extension Service personnel. Once county estimates are complete, state totals are tabulated for this special report. Estimates are revised periodically as new information becomes available. These revisions are posted to our Web site noted below.
Farm gate sales or receipts are a traditional measure of economic activity reported for the agricul- tural industry. Individual commodity categories are subject to interpretation depending upon the refinement of classification. The level of aggregation may shift the apparent ranking of a commodity sector. Aggregating individual grass seed varieties, for example, results in much greater revenues than any single variety. Thus, measures of importance based on gross sales are sensitive to the categorization scheme and level of aggregation.
Rankings are based on the value of gross farm sales. For livestock forages, in particular, the value of sales is significantly less than the value of production, since these forages are produced for on-farm use. Prices used to compute farm gate sales do not include direct government payments.
"Other farm income," particularly farm forestry or small woodlot products, is included in these agri- cultural estimates. Farm forestry is a significant contributor to farm income, at $181.1 million (pg. 4). Caution should be used in comparing these agricultural estimates with the Department of Forestry numbers, as this may lead to the double counting of sales.
Commodity Data Sheets are published throughout the year, reporting major agricultural commodi- ties produced in Oregon. They contain a county-level breakdown of production, data on other Northwest states or other states important to the specific commodity, and total figures for the United States. Commodity Data Sheets are published by groupings: grains and hay, field crops, tree fruits and nuts, small fruits and berries, vegetable and truck crops, specialty products, livestock and poultry. Thank you to all the county Extension agents and specialists who assisted our office with the devel- opment of these estimates for all the crops and livestock throughout Oregon.
A special thank you to Robert Clark of Dixon Creek Software for his programming talents. Mr. Clark built our Web site interface, which interacts with our databases so we may now provide you with up-to-date availability of our county and state-level statistics.
