Estimates of autism’s incidence increased 5-10 fold in ten years, an increase which cannot be genetic. Though many mutations are associated with autism, no mutation seems directly to cause autism. We need to find the direct cause. Complexity science provides a new paradigm - confirmed in biology by extensive hard data. Both the body and the personality are complex dynamic systems which spontaneously self-organize from simple dynamic systems. Autism may therefore be caused by the failure of a simple dynamic system. Single- and multi-photon events with missing energy are selected in 619 pb(-1) of data collected by the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. The cross sections of the process e(+) e(-) nunugamma(gamma) are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model expectations, and the number of light neutrino species is determined, including lower energy data, to be N-nu = 2.98 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.04. Selection results are given in the form of tables which can be used to test future models involving single- and multi-photon signatures at LEP. These final states are also predicted by models with large extra dimensions and by several supersymmetric models. No evidence for such models is found. Cosmogenic nuclide surface-exposure dating reveals that glaciers in southern South America (46degreesS) advanced ca. 8.5 and 6.2 ka, likely as a result of a northward migration of the Southern Westerlies that caused an increase in precipitation and/or a decrease in temperature at this latitude. The older advance precedes the currently accepted initiation of Holocene glacial activity in southern South America by similar to3000 yr. Both of these advances are temporally synchronous with Holocene climate oscillations that occurred in Greenland and the rest of the world. We review the current status of flavor-changing neutral currents in the charm sector. We focus on the standard-model predictions and identify the main sources of theoretical uncertainties in both D-0-(D) over bar (0) mixing and rare charm decays. The potential of these observables for constraining short-distance physics in the standard model and its extensions is compromised by the presence of large nonperturbative effects. We examine the possible discovery windows in which short-distance physics can be tested and study the effects of various extensions to the standard model. The current experimental situation and future prospects are reviewed.
We report multiwavelength observations of the soft X-ray transient XTE J1118 + 480, which we observed with UKIRT, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), RXTE, Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) and many other instruments and facilities. Adding radio (Ryle Telescope, VLA), submillimetre (JCMT) and X-ray (Chandra and SAX) data from the literature, we assembled the most complete spectral energy distribution (SED) of this source yet published. We followed the evolution of this source for 1 yr, including six observations performed during the outburst, and one observation at the end of the outburst. Because of the unusually high galactic latitude of XTE J1118 + 480, it suffers from very low extinction, and its SED is nearly complete, including extreme ultraviolet observations. We have performed a search for Sarin, a chemical warfare agent, in luggage-sized sealed containers in order to illustrate how effectively and quickly a search could be conducted in a fixed installation at airports, embassies, government buildings, military installations, and other public areas. A portable neutron generator and a Californium source were used, generating up to 10(8) neutrons per second, that penetrate into a container and are capable of exciting a sample in a period of approximately 10 s, to produce enough gamma radiation that target elements within the sample can be identified. In the vast majority of cases, there is no chemical agent present, so the question becomes how long to search. We show results of tests for sensitivity of this technique as a function of time. [1] A single plane fracture with an axially symmetric stress distribution behaves as a seismic lens that focuses seismic energy to a beam "waist'' at a focal plane. Both phase and amplitude effects on a seismic wave propagating across the fracture contribute to the lensing behavior. Radial gradients in the fracture specific stiffness cause wave refraction through a radially varying group time delay, while the fracture transmission amplitude approximates a Fresnel zone plate. This work demonstrates that a two-dimensional planar fracture, contrasted with three-dimensional geologic structures such as basins and domes, can focus seismic waves. Focusing of seismic waves by fractures should be considered in the interpretation of seismic data from fractured strata with heterogeneous stress distributions.
We report the first measurements of electron transparency, ion transparency and ion feedback of a mass produced 3M GEM. Our results indicate that a mass produced GEM and a CERN GEM have similar values of these three quantities. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
