The Master thesis hereby presented is the result of six months of research in order to propose a new adjustable molding system to the company 3Form EU. This research was conducted during the last semester of 2011 at the headquarters of 3Form EU and at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering of Delft University of Technology. This thesis intends to improve the current method used by 3Form for thermoforming its core material, called Varia, composed mainly by PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) and supplied in sheets. To do so, an innovative adjustable molding tool is designed to add efficiency to the process and offer more affordable shaped products. In contrast to CTOL landing operations, STOL airplanes landing on short STOLport runways typically begin the flare maneuver before reaching the runway surface. Vertical guidance procedures were developed to allow an autoland flight control system for a STOL airplane to use Microwave Landing System (MLS) signals as altitude and sink rate references for flare initiation, with a transition to radar altimeter after the airplane is over the runway. The implementation has minimum impact on the control system and landing performance. Data are presented which show validation of the concepts in a simulator.

The mechanization and performance of a STOL terminal area navigation system are described. The purpose of the navigation system is to allow flying with precision 4D-guidance along complex flight paths in the terminal area, and to develop requirements for STOL operations in the 1980s. The navigation aids include an experimental microwave landing system, MODILS. The systems description begins with the navigation aids. It is shown how the data are transformed and combined with other data to obtain position and velocity estimates. Also presented are some of the design changes and other features that were introduced as a result of flight testing. The various ways of displaying navigation-derived data are given. Finally, simulator and flight test results are discussed.
