Conscious events interact with memory systems in learning, rehearsal and retrieval (Ebbinghaus 1885/1964; Tulving 1985). Here we present hypotheses that arise from the IDA computional model (Franklin, Kelemen and McCauley 1998; Franklin 2001b) of global workspace theory (Baars 1988, 2002). Our primary tool for this exploration is a flexible cognitive cycle employed by the IDA computational model and hypothesized to be a basic element of human cognitive processing. Since cognitive cycles are hypothesized to occur five to ten times a second and include interaction between conscious contents and several of the memory systems, they provide the means for an exceptionally fine-grained analysis of various cognitive tasks. We apply this tool to the small effect size of subliminal learning compared to supraliminal learning, to process dissociat...
Refractive indices, n(D), and densities, rho, at 298.15 K were measured for the ternary mixture methanol (MeOH)/propan-1-ol (1-PrOH)/acetonitrile (MeCN) for a total of 22 mole fractions, along with 18 mole fractions of each of the corresponding binary mixtures, methanol/propan-1-ol, propan-1-ol/acetonitrile and methanol/acetonitrile. The variation of excess refractive indices and excess molar volumes with composition was modeled by the Redlich-Kister polynomial function in the case of binary mixtures and by the Cibulka equation for the ternary mixture. A thermodynamic approach to excess refractive indices, recently proposed by other authors, was applied for the first time to ternary liquid mixtures. Structural effects were identified and interpreted both in the binary and ternary systems. A complex relationship between excess refractiv...
INTRODUCTION: Biventricular pacing has been studied for the treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF). This technique seems to be able to improve symptoms and exercise tolerance, in patients with advanced CHF and prolonged QRS duration. OBJECTIVE: To present our experience with biventricular pacing in the management of severe CHF. METHODS: Between June 2000 and March 2001, 8 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy and left bundle branch block (LBBB) were selected for transvenous biventricular pacing system implantation. Mean age: 54.12 +/- 16.8 years; 5 males. The etiology was: idiopathic in 6 cases; operated congenital heart disease in 1, and ischemic in the other. Despite tailored treatment of CHF (with all patients taking diuretics and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors), 7 patients remained in NYHA class III and 1 in IV. The qu...
Early detection of dementia is an important element for the efficacy of therapies currently proposed to slow down disease progression. This detection mainly relies on general practitioners. In order to estimate the impact of dementia on health services, we have estimated from the data of the NAtional Dementia Economic Study (NADES) the prevalence rate of dementia in patients aged > or = 65 years living at home and consulting in general practice. The study population was based on the sampling of consecutive patients consulting a general practitioner, irrespective of the reason and location of the consultation. The diagnosis of dementia was based on the CAMDEX performed at home in patients presenting > or = 3 warning signs of dementia. The prevalence rate of dementia among 2.234 registered patients living at home was 14.3% (CI95: 12.6-16...
The structure of ultrathin NaCl films on Au(1 1 1) and on Au(11 12 12), as well as the one of bimolecular 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) and 1,4-bis-(2,4-diamino-1,3,5,-triazine)-benzene (BDATB) islands on NaCl films on both surfaces have been studied with a low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscope. We show that intermixed bimolecular assemblies based on selective three-fold hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding), that have previously been observed on Au(1 1 1) and on Au(11 12 12), can also be stabilized on insulating NaCl films on Au, however, only if these films are grown on Au(11 12 12) and not on Au(1 1 1). The behaviour of the heterocomplex structures is found to be largely influenced by the structural properties of the underlying substrate and by the number of NaCl layers. On a partly NaCl-covered Au(1 1 1) surface,...
A Pseudomonas 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG)-producing population that occurred naturally on the roots, in rhizosphere soil of Zea mays and in the nonrhizosphere soil was investigated in order to assess the microbial diversity at five stages of plant growth. A total of 1,716 isolates were obtained, and 188 of these isolates were able to produce DAPG. DAPG producers were isolated at each stage of plant growth, indicating that the maize rhizosphere is colonized by natural DAPG producers throughout development. The frequency of DAPG producers was very low in the first stage of plant growth and increased over time. An analysis of the level of biodiversity of the DAPG producers at the species level was performed by comparing the AluI restriction patterns of the 16S ribosomal DNAs (rDNAs) amplified by PCR from 167 isolates. This compariso...
