Chapter 7, part of the "Early Modern Japan" section, provides a clear and informative account of various Japanese cultural developments, including those in the arts, literature, leisure, and travel.
The purpose of this thesis was to determine when it could be advantageous for two competing technology companies to cooperate with one another. To answer this question, an illustrative case study of the Ashkelon desalination plant was analyzed against traditional theories and, once those theories were proven to be insufficient, a more refined contingency approach of cooperating for the future was proposed. This thesis' study revealed that a competing technological company can cooperate with a competitor, if their collaboration promises to result in a breakthrough technology or advancement for an emerging market. In addition to the introduction of a contingency approach that is in favor of technological competitors cooperating, the final chapter also provided managerial advice to help understand and apply the cooperating for the future ...
With control over both store shelves and consumers' consciousness, Japanese video games have dominated the U.S. and global game markets over the past two decades and continue to prosper today. This thesis positions Japanese video games' popularity in America in the global flows of pop culture, and argues that the "Japanization" of pop culture, represented by the "Japanization" of video games, has challenged the cultural globalization process that is taken for granted as hegemonized by the Western, especially American, cultural imperialism. In this thesis I examine the cultural localization process (beyond technical and linguistic localization) of Japanese video games for the U.S. releases, to further demonstrate the transnationality of Japanese pop culture. Meanwhile, I investigate the American fan base for Japanese video games and ide...
Video game developers and journalists on both sides of the Pacific agree that the preferences of Japanese and American video gamers are quite different. Their consensus is that Americans prefer a relatively higher level of control in most aspects of their video games, compared to the Japanese. This difference is largely attributed to differences in culture. This study compares American and Japanese on three factors: 1) their desire to control aspects of a video game, 2) their tendency to avoid ambiguous or uncertain situations in their everyday lives, and 3) their desire to have control over their everyday lives. The results show that Americans desire a relatively higher level of control in their everyday lives, but prefer a relatively lower level of control in their video games compared to their Japanese counterparts. This difference ...
The present study deals with the educational reforms set into place by the Supreme Commander of Allied Powers (SCAP) from 1945 to 1952. Through the review of several issues within Occupation era educational reform, the research deals with how SCAP's policies directly affected the lives of students. The study of this topic is valuable to the areas of Japanese history as well as educational policy studies and comparative/international education studies. From researching SCAP policies that affected primary school students, the effect that the rapid reforms of the Occupation had on typical Japanese youth can easily be seen. Methods for exploration include an analysis of the school lunch program implemented by SCAP. Also researched are reforms by SCAP to eliminate the presence of religious practices in the schools and the curriculum. The st...
Using the records from Avon Product's, Inc. corporate archive housed at the Hagley Museum and Library, this dissertation explores the migration of the Avon Lady from the suburbs of the United States in the 1950s to today's global marketplace. Rather than merely selling lipsticks and perfumes, I argue that Avon's direct selling system is a geopolitical project that has - and continues to- capitalize on national differences by presenting Western beauty practices as key to modernity; ideal femininity as something achieved by consumption of beauty aids; and the work of an Avon Lady as a gateway to "civilized" society. To better isolate key moments in Avon's global expansion, each chapter examines specific discourses over the last fifty years that have helped produce and sustain Avon's far flung geographic reach and influence. Some examine ...
This volume explores phenomena frequently noted (yet seldom analyzed) in the scholarly literature: the profound similarities in the industrialization processes and the contemporary political economies of Germany and Japan. These parallels not just in the early stages of industrialization, but through the experiences of depression and war, and on to the rise of postwar miracle economies in both nations are often casually ascribed to the late-developer effect, to the strategic imitation of German economic institutions in Japan, or to cultural factors, from lingering feudal remnants to enduring traditional social structures. Tagging the economic regimes which had evolved in Germany and Japan by the 1970s nonliberal capitalist systems, the essays in this collection seek to investigate systematically the many similarities between the two ca...
Broadcast Transcript: Baseball is called bang qiu here in China. And, if a recent exploration trip taken by New York Yankee bigwigs is any indication, it looks as if China might be the next major outsource for major league outfielders. Not right away, of course. To date, China hasn't produced any players good enough to be in the show or even in the farm leagues. I mean, who can forget China's excruciating three game combined score 40-6 loss in the World Baseball Classic? But soon, perhaps, with training and focus, China could supply world class players the way the Dominican Republic and Venezuela do now. Meanwhile, the Yankee execs will sell Yankee merchandise--most of which was probably made in China to begin with! #ceas #china #hacker #tsutsui
Broadcast Transcript: This Postcard is brought to you from New York City where Fu Qian has just had her bat mitzvah at a synagogue on the city's Upper West Side. Of course, now she's called Cecelia Nealon-Shapiro, having been renamed 13 years ago when she was adopted from China. The party included the expected: a reading from the Torah, a speech, some dancing to Hava Nagila; and the unexpected: yinyang yarmulkes, Kiddush cups in the shape of dragons, kosher lo mein. Cecilia is by no means the only Chinese adoptee to mark the traditional rite of passage into Jewish womanhood. "Most of my Chinese friends are Jewish," she says. Well, as Confucius might say, "Oy vey." #ceas #china #hacker #NewYorkCity #tsutsui
Broadcast Transcript: After you've spent, say, two weeks in China, the thing you appreciate most about Japan is the bathrooms. From heated seats to auto-flush to automatic deodorizers to a warm air bottom-drying system that eliminates the need for toilet tissue, the Japanese toilet does what it can to make the bathroom experience sublime. Of course, when things go wrong with such a sophisticated system, things go very wrong. Still, the last thing you expect in a toilet is a fire. But this is just what happened to about 30 toilets in the Toto Z series, forcing a recall of 180,000 units. Happily, no one was seated on any of the units when the fires broke out. Okay. I know. You could still call it a "hot seat." #ceas #hacker #japan #tsutsui
