The main argument of the PhD thesis is the evaluation of the ATLAS detector potential to discover Supersymmetry and to estimate the masses of the supersymmetric particles produced in events with two isolated leptons (electrons or muons) in the final state. The Supersymmetry (SUSY) is one of the most credited theories to extend the Standard Model (SM). This theory foresees a new class of particles that can be detected reconstructing their decay chains. The ATLAS Experiment is a multi-purpose detector, operating at the LHC. In this thesis the first observation of W → τν decays in ATLAS with proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy is presented. The amount of data used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.46±0.27 pb^(−1). The W → τν decays are searched in the channel in which the tau decays into a neutrino and a hadronic system.
In March 2010 the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN started its operation at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV. Since then, the ATLAS experiment has been collecting a large number of proton-proton collision events, resulting in an integrated luminosity of about 5.2 fb-1up to now. My PhD research has been focused on top quark physics, which is one of the milestones of the ATLAS experiment physics program. The production of top quarks is the dominant high-pT process in p-p collisions at multi-TeV energies, after QCD jets, W and Z bosons. Furthermore, top quark physics is a rich subject, in fact top quark events are used for detector commissioning and to provide a consistency test of the Standard Model. ATLAS is one of the four experiments that will analyze the p-p collisions at LHC. It consists of several subsystems: the Inner Detector is devoted to the measurement of the charged particle tracks in the interaction point region and the Pixel Detector is its innermost component. Both have been commissioned by using cosmic rays collected by the ATLAS detector in 2009. In the first part of the thesis, the spatial resolution of the Pixel Detector is studied and optimized. When a charged particle traverses the Pixel Detector, charges released in the sensors are collected by segmented electrodes, the pixels. The charge of each pixel is read out by the Time-over-Threshold technique and adjacent pixels are grouped into clusters. Cluster position can be computed by considering its geometrical center, but spatial resolution can be optimized if ...
