This dissertation was elaborated prioritising the photographic images as sources and was entitled History and Image: the Society Written with Light. Rio de Janeiro (1840 – 1889). From the analysis of photographs from the second half of the 19th century this study searches to perceive the production of Rio de Janeiro as a modern and picturesque city at the same time, as well as of the society engendered in this space. This construction results from the dialogue/confrontation between two kinds of languages: the photography which focuses the modern side, and the travel literature which focuses the picturesque/exotic, without the exclusion of none of these two aspects by those speeches. Besides, the attentive reading of such sources allowed to comprehend the configuration of the modern and civilized deportment in Rio de Janeiro’s society, ...
This research aimed to analyze how the modernity and the feminine were built in the context of Belle Époque (1907-1914), in the city of Rio de Janeiro, according to Fon- Fon which was a weekly magazine, published in the beginning of the 20th century and recognized as a way to be updated on the Carioca's society. Our intention was to investigate how the modernity and the feminine was built through the analysis of images, representations and meanings broadcasted by Fon-Fon. We tryed to show the way that the authors, from differents sections of the magazine, represented the modernization and the feminine, how they did their readings and, at the same time, how they taught the readers to read and interpret those concepts. The results highlight that, besides the modernity, the magazine also worked in the discursive construction of gender in ...
In the present thesis, I have focused as the object of study the representations of the vivandières, construes propagated in different speeches on the presence and the action of the women in the stages of the war. I have searched to analyze the discursive scene of the images of vivandières elaborated in the past and the present. Such images disclose its conditions of production, the way that discursively they had been produced, recognized and meant. In a denaturalization effort I have been particularly aware of the evidences that have enabled the questionings of what had been presented as a natural basis and access other forms of actuation and historical significance of the women in the fields of battle. I have searched out orientations that left behind previous and sexist schemes, establishers of the feminine/masculine essence, of a d...
The Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 demanded from the forces in dispute thesearch of a new base of agreement. Aiming the Paulistan disarmament, GetúlioVargas indicated, in August 1933, Armando de Salles Oliveira as Federal Intervenor. This indication generated discomfort to the Paulistan Republican Party, which was attime an opposition party, yearning to retake its place in the power. In 1934 a newConstitution seemed to indicate redefinition for political alligiances that could finallypromote the return of Paulistan political projects for Brazilian development, with thenecessary adaptation from 1930’s Revolution. With this in mind, what is the meaningof Brazilian Revolution of 1930? What about the course between 1932 and 1934? Torethink these questions we have the necessity of restore the dialogues and conflictsoccurred in the core...
Dissertação (mestrado)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Ciências Humanas, Departamento de História, Programa de Pós-Graduação em História, 2012.
Under the heading "The women, the community of Conceição and its fights: histories written in the feminism", I analyzed in this study, as the identities had been being formatted in the community to be fit in the politics of identities and power to appeal to the law of identification and landmark of the land. For this analysis I searched information in the laws that had nominated part of the Brazilian people as "quilombola". Identity constructed according to a set of common values, traditions and common significations, to be identified as remaining of "quilombo" becomes strategically used instrument of negotiation. Significantly, in the story, the intention to identify an origin, a founder myth, that legitimizes in its longevity and history of the occupation and ownership of those lands, seated in the action of the six "Creoles" is visi...

In this thesis, our objective is to historicize the schooling experience of boys and girls in the Province of Goiás which occurred during in the 19th century (1827-1889). Our argument is that the school has worked as a complex social technology of gender, producing/replicating effects of male/female in bodies, in behaviors and social relations. In this sense, we investigated strategies and discursive techniques mobilized in daily school life, to domesticate, to model, to produce useful bodies, in other words, to educated and civilize individuals, according to the logic of unequal separation of genders: boys over here, girls over there! In research conducted, we selected a set of documents, including a set of laws, narratives reports, presidential messages concerning to public education, newspapers, memoirs and travel literatur...
