This thesis investigates a means for applying the object-oriented paradigm to the domain of finite element analysis. The thrust is to investigate, design, implement, and demonstrate FE++, an extensible object-oriented application framework to support the construction of a wide variety of FEA application programs. The major goal of FE++ is to support research in a broad domain of finite element analysis by providing an object-oriented architecture and a set of programming abstractions that offer "test-bed" capability for rapid prototyping of a variety of FEA applications. These target applications range from simple linear elastic analysis to fully nonlinear transient analysis. The abstractions and mechanisms provided by FE++ ease the configuration of different solution algorithms. The FE++ architecture accommodates finite element models...
Thalidomide, renowned for causing birth defects in the late 1950s when used for the relief of morning sickness, has attracted new interest for the treatment of inflammatory conditions such as erythema nodosum leprosum and human malignancies such as multiple myeloma. Different species have different sensitivities to thalidomide that could be related to differences in its metabolism. In this study, methodologies using liquid chromatographymass spectrometry were developed to identify thalidomide metabolites formed in vivo and in vitro in liver microsomes from mice, rabbits and humans, firstly to seek explanations for inter-species differences in sensitivity, and secondly to determine whether thalidomide or its metabolite(s) is the active agent. Four hydrolysis products were detected in plasma and urine samples from multiple myeloma patien...
The first chapter explores the determinants of people's decisions to take 401(k) loans. We model factors that rationally would induce people to borrow from their pension plans, and we explain why people do not often use 401(k) loans to replace their more expensive credit card debt. Next we test our hypotheses using a rich dataset and show that people who are liquidity-constrained are more likely to have plan loans, while the better- off take larger loans when they do borrow. Plan characteristics such as the number of loans allowed also influence borrowing and loan size in interesting ways, while loan interest rates have only a small impact.^ The second chapter investigates the determinants of defaults on 401(k) loans, using a rich dataset of over 100,000 participants who terminate employment with a plan loan outstanding. Overall, one...

Slags are crystalline to vitreous by-product materials generated in many high temperature industrial processes. This study presents a general technique for the identification of the phases present in petroleum coke gasification slags. documents the phase assemblages and textures, and finally determines the dissolution of vanadium from these slags as part of the considerations of potential resource reclamation. The general identification procedure utilizes (1) recognition of separate phases using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy; (2) electron probe microanalysis (EPM) of chemical compositions of individual phases; (3) statistical analysis of the EPM data to eliminate spurious data; (4) estimation of valence states of transition metals using thermodynamic and computational methods; (5) derivation of chemical formula...

The Idol Mine, operated by Clinch Valley Mining Company, is located at the southern end of the Copper Ridge District in Northeastern Tennessee. It is a relatively typical carbonatehosted zinc (Mississippi valley Type) deposit. The ores occur as interfragmental fillings within carbonate breccia bodies of the Lower Ordovician Kingsport and Mascot formations. The paragenesis study reveals that sphalerite, the only zinc mineral, precipitated at the earliest stage of ore formation accompanied by minor amounts of dolomite and marcasite. A major stage of coarse white dolomite precipitation took place after sphalerite. Minor amounts of other gangue minerals including pyrite, calcite, quartz, gypsum and fluorite all postdate ore formation. Field observations complemented by macro- and micro-scale examination of polished sections and doubly-p...

The operation efficiency of fuel cell power systems varies largely according to their operation conditions, and there exists a unique maximum efficiency point (MEP). The objective of this paper is to propose a novel control strategy to maximize the efficiency of fuel cell power generation. A maximum efficiency point tracking (MEPT) controller is designed based on extremum seeking control algorithm. This closed-loop, real-time and non-model based control methodology is able to guarantee that the extremum is achieved under rapidly changing operation conditions, which is not acceptable by traditional optimization methods, such as perturbation and observe algorithm. The proposed system is simulated in SIMULINK/MATLAB environment to verify the performance of MEPT controller. The system shows acceptable response time and stability under chan...
We consider a search model of the labor market with two types of equally productive workers and two types of firms, discriminators and non-discriminators. Without policy intervention, there is wage dispersion between and within the two worker groups, but all wage differences become negligible when the taste for discrimination is small. We analyze the effect of an equal-pay policy, both in combination with affirmative action and without. When equal opportunity of hiring cannot be enforced, wage dispersion increases and wages for minority workers fall substantially relative to laissez faire. Sometimes also the wage gap between worker groups widens in response to the policy.
