The acidic, non-oxidative dissolution of galena nanocrystals has been studied using both microscopic and wet-chemical methods. The effects of particle size, shape, aggregation state, and grain proximity on dissolution rates were investigated. Nearly monodisperse galena nanocrystals with an average diameter of 14.4 nm and a truncated cubic shape were synthesized. In the dissolution experiments of dispersed nanocrystals, galena nanocrystals attached on the surface of a TEM grid were exposed to deoxygenated HCl solutions (pH 3) at 25 °C. Capping groups on nanocrystals were removed via a washing process, and chemistry of nanocrystals was examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The evolution of the size and shape of the pre- and post-dissolution nanocrystals were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the ...
Although many methods have been proposed to reconstruct gene regulatory network, most of them, when applied in the sample-based data, can not reveal the gene regulatory relations underlying the phenotypic change (e.g. normal versus cancer). In this paper, we adopt phenotype as a variable when constructing the gene regulatory network, while former researches either neglected it or only used it to select the differentially expressed genes as the inputs to construct the gene regulatory network. To be specific, we integrate phenotype information with gene expression data to identify the gene dependency pairs by using the method of conditional mutual information. A gene dependency pair (A,B) means that the influence of gene A on the phenotype depends on gene B. All identified gene dependency pairs constitute a directed network underlying th...
Chery, a Chinese domestic car maker, launched a new mini car model, the QQ in July 2003. This was several months earlier than the planned launch date for General Motor (GM)'s new mini car, the Chevrolet Spark. The QQ looked very similar to the Chevrolet Spark but was priced much cheaper. GM claimed that the Chery QQ was a knockoff of the Matiz, a model owned by GM Daewoo. To make matters worse for GM, Chery was aggressively expanding into other countries where GM had a presence. The case was tailored for illustrating the IPR challenges for multinationals to do business in China.

In this review, we summarize the major fundamental advances in immunological research reported in 2011. The highlights focus on the improved understanding of key questions in basic immunology, including the initiation and activation of innate responses as well as mechanisms for the development and function of various T-cell subsets. The research includes the identification of novel cytosolic RNA and DNA sensors as well as the identification of the novel regulators of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) and retinoic acid-inducible gene I (RIG-I)-like receptor (RLR) signaling pathway. Moreover, remarkable advances have been made in the developmental and functional properties of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs). Helper T cells and regulatory T (Treg) cells play indispensable roles in orchestrating adaptive immunity. There have been exciting discover...

The distributions of endophytic bacteria in Alopecurus aequalis Sobol and Oxalis corniculata L. grown in soils contaminated with different levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were investigated with polymerase chain reaction followed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis technology (PCR-DGGE) and cultivation methods. Twelve types of PAHs, at concentrations varying from 0.16 to 180 mg·kg−1, were observed in the roots and shoots of the two plants. The total PAH concentrations in Alopecurus aequalis Sobol obtained from three different PAH-contaminated stations were 184, 197, and 304 mg·kg−1, and the total PAH concentrations in Oxalis corniculata L. were 251, 346, and 600 mg·kg−1, respectively. The PCR-DGGE results showed that the endophytic bacterial communities in the roots and shoots of the two plants were quite differ...
