Epithelioid hemangiosarcoma is a specific variant of hemangiosarcoma that has recently been recognized in domestic animals. These malignant vascular neoplasms histologically resemble, and may be mistaken for, carcinomas. Four epithelioid hemangiosarcomas in the urinary bladders of 4 cows with severe enzootic hematuria are described in the current study. Grossly, the vesicular mucosa of the urinary bladder of each cow contained a single red elevated nodule. Histologically, each neoplasm was composed of short strands, cords, or nests of epithelioid, round, or slightly spindle-shaped endothelial cells that formed small vascular structures. Neoplastic cells were immunohistochemically positive for factor VIII–related antigen and vimentin, and were negative for cytokeratin and desmin. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells often contained c...
The dibenzodioxatetraazamacrocycle [26]pbz(2)N(4)O(2) was characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction and the protonation constants of this compound and the stability constants of its copper(II) and lead(II) complexes were determined by potentiometry in water at 298.2 K in 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO3. Mono- and dinuclear complexes were found for both metal ions, the dinuclear complexes being the main species in the 5-7.5 pH range for copper(II) and 7.5-8.5 for lead(II). As expected the values of the stability constants for the copper(II) complexes are lower than those for related macrocycles containing only nitrogen atoms. The presence of mono- and dinuclear copper complexes was also confirmed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. These results suggest that the symmetric macrocyclic cavity of [26]pbZ(2)N(4)O(2) has enough spa...
OBJECTIVES: This study took place at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Dr Daniel de Matos Maternity Hospital and evaluated the incidence of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), the clinical evolution of the newborns affected, the treatment prescribed, and associated morbidity and mortality. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective medical chart review of newborns admitted to the NICU between January 2001 and December 2005. RESULTS: PDA was found in 69 newborns. Median gestational age (GA) was 28 weeks and birth weight (BW) 1100 grams. The diagnosis of PDA was established, on average, between the fifth and sixth day of life. Of the 53 newborns with criteria for closure, 49 had indomethacin therapy, with a success rate of 88%; surgical ligation was subsequently necessary in six of these. Thirty-eight newborns presented associated ...
The authors present the case of a child with recurrent infections since the age of 4 months, including bilateral pneumonia by Pneumocystis carinii and protracted varicella. Serum immunoglobulin values (when 10 months old), and B cell values were normal. There was persistent lymphocytic leucocytosis, near absence of CD8+ cells, and an increased CD4/CD8 ratio. The percentage of activated T cells and the expression of HLA class I were normal. Proliferation, activation and IL-2 synthesis studies in T cells showed a TCR/CD3-associated signal transduction deficit. ZAP-70 cDNA sequencing showed a mutation, and no ZAP-70 protein was detected in T cells. ZAP-70 deficiency is associated with a rare immune deficiency with absence of CD8+ T cells as well as a functional deficiency in T cells. Seven months after bone marrow transplantation the chil...
The conditions for the growth of (Perylene)(2) [Pd(mnt)(2)] crystals either by chemical oxidation and electrochemical routes are described. The electrocrystallisation is limited by close proximity of the oxidation potentials of the perylene donor and [Pd(mnt)(2)](-) anion, and depending on the experimental conditions different morphologies can be obtained. (Per)(2) [Pd(mnt)(2)] crystals obtained by elecrocrystallisation were found to be mainly of the beta-polymorph with properties comparable to the Cu, Ni and Pt analogues previously described at variance with those obtained by chemical oxidation which are mainly of the alpha-polymorph.
