This project was to design a bicycle power-assist conversion kit for the Dutch market, in collaboration with Bandito Enterprise; a bicycle manufacturing company based in Taiwan. A large number of people in the Netherlands commute to work and school using conventional bicycles, as well as for recreational use, and often face opposing strong winds. A smaller number use petroleum fuelled mopeds (Snorfietsen) that travel at a maximum speed of 25km/h. Although these mopeds are more affordable than electric bicycles, and indeed electric mopeds, they boast significantly higher usage costs. On average, a cyclist travels 2.5km per day, while moped users cover a mere 0.15km per day. This limitation of use can be ascribed to higher usage costs for mopeds. Rituals is a Home and Body cosmetics brand with over 220 stores worldwide. Six stores also have a City Spa and here one can receive a treatment. Using exclusively the products sold in the stores. The products are inspired by Eastern rituals such as the Ayurveda ritual from India. The focus of this thesis is on the Rituals City Spas. In 2008 the first City Spa was built and over the years five more were built. The City Spa should strengthen the brand Rituals and improve sales in the stores. However after five years the City Spas have not reached their full potential. This paper presents the first observational study of an ongoing research project. The research focuses on ‘teaching conceptual design’ and on the investigation of new teaching methods and strategies. Presently, in the commonly established educational setting, students practice the role of designing during design exercises while being tutored by a design teacher. In these circumstances, teacher and student interaction is of paramount importance. However, it is very difficult for teachers to effectively guide students during conceptual design, even though various ideageneration techniques are available. A new folding bicycle was design for commuters. Focus on the design lays in rolling the bike in folded state rather than carrying. The forthcoming weight of a shaft drive makes the bicycle to heavy to carry.
