In opdracht van inTAAL is de eerst stap gezet van een uitgebreid onderzoek naar de gebruiksvriendelijkheid van TouchSpeak Designer voor logopedisten. TouchSpeak software is een communicatiehulpmiddel voor mensen met afasie dat draait op een pda (personal digital assistent/handcomputer). Op het aanraakscherm van de pda kan de cliënt berichten selecteren. De software wordt geconfigureerd middels TouchSpeak Designer, dat draait op de computer van de therapeut, meestal een logopedist. Deze software wordt gebruikt om de software op de pda voor de cliënt te personaliseren. Het doel en aanpak van het onderzoek was tweeledig. The objectives of this thesis were to evaluate in practice workload, fitness and welfare of riding horses under work and training conditions. Chapter II presents an overview of the parameters used in earlier studies on training, behaviour and equine welfare, and describes the evaluation of the physiological and behavioural responses of horses in field work. Chapter III describes a study on the fitness and responses to training of young Friesian horses. The fitness of horses appeared to improve but there was wide heterogeneity in responses to training. A familial aggregation of heart rate (HR) response to training was identified in horses for the first time. This study proposes a nonhomogeneous birth–death model which captures the dynamics of a directly transmitted infectious disease. Our model accounts for an important aspect of observed epidemic data in which only symptomatic infecteds are observed. The nonhomogeneous birth–death process depends on survival distributions of reproduction and removal, which jointly yield an estimate of the effective reproduction number R(t) as a function of epidemic time. We employ the Burr distribution family for the survival functions and, as special cases, proportional rate and accelerated event-time models are also employed for the parameter estimation procedure. In this paper, generalized nonlinear models are proposed in order to incorporate the following considerations in modeling an epidemic disease outbreak statistically. (1) The dependence of the data is handled with a nonhomogeneous death or a nonhomogeneous birth process. (2) The first stage of the outbreak is described with an epidemic susceptibles-infectives-removed (SIR) model. Soon the control measures taken will dominate the process. These measures are in addition to the natural epidemic removal process. The prevalence is related to the censored infection times in such a way that the distribution function and thus the survival function satisfy approximately the first equation of the SIR model.
