This paper systematically investigates for the first time the evolution of switch bounce for the Omron 2SMES-01 switch as a function of lifetime cycling. We demonstrate that the first bounce duration monotonically increases by as much as 20% over 200 million cycles. In addition, the amplitude of tertiary bounces monotonically increase by as much as 100 % over the same interval with the spontaneous occurrence of new bounces persisting as cycle count increases. Measurement of switch bouncing provides a readily accessible form of transient analysis of RF MEMS contacts and has the potential to become an indispensable tool for in-situ switch diagnostics related to adhesion forces, contact hardening, and film formation. The punc gene, encoding a member of the neural cell adhesion molecule family expressed in the developing central nervous system, limbs, and inner ear, was identified. To extend studies of the normal expression pattern of punc and to determine its function, a mouse strain bearing a lacZ/neo insertion in a 5′ coding exon was created. The complex pattern of punc expression in embryos from embryonic day 9.5 (E9.5) to E11.5 was mimicked accurately by β-galactosidase (β-Gal) activity. As development proceeded, the distribution of β-Gal activity was increasingly restricted, finally becoming confined to the brain and inner ear by E15.5. Human MutLα, a heterodimer of hMLH1 and hPMS2, is essential for DNA mismatch repair. Inactivation of the hmlh1 or hpms2 genes by mutation or epigenesis causes genomic instability and a predisposition to hereditary non-polyposis cancer. We report here the X-ray crystal structures of the conserved N-terminal 40 kDa fragment of hPMS2, NhPMS2, and its complexes with ATPγS and ADP at 1.95, 2.7 and 2.7 Å resolution, respectively. The NhPMS2 structures closely resemble the ATPase fragment of Escherichia coli MutL, which coordinates protein–protein interactions in mismatch repair by undergoing structural transformation upon binding of ATP. Sponsored search advertising has grown rapidly since the last decade and is now a significant revenue source for search engines. To ameliorate revenues, search engines often set fixed or variable reserve price to in influence advertisers' bidding. This paper studies and compares two pricing mechanisms: the generalized second-price auction (GSP) where the winner at the last ad position pays the larger value between the highest losing bid and reserve price, and the GSP with a posted reserve price (APR) where the winner at the last position pays the reserve price. DNA base extrusion is a crucial component of many biomolecular processes. Elucidating how bases are selectively extruded from the interiors of double-strand DNAs is pivotal to accurately understanding and efficiently sampling this general type of conformational transitions. In this work, the on-the-path random walk (OTPRW) method, which is the first generalized ensemble sampling scheme designed for finite-temperature-string path optimizations, was improved and applied to obtain the minimum free energy path (MFEP) and the free energy profile of a classical B-DNA major-groove base extrusion pathway. [[abstract]]©1989 Elsevier - A minimum end time initiator addition policy for batch emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate under a constant reaction temperature is found using a general nonlinear programming solver and orthogonal collocation techniques. The constraints are restrictions on the reaction rate of the polymerization and the total amount of initiator added. A 5-1 jacketed reactor with a computerized temperature control system was used to carry out several experimental runs. Experimental results show a good agreement with theoretical predictions for this complex system. The results also demonstrate that good temperature control can be achieved for this highly exothermic reaction system under these optimal-control policies.
Corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete is the most predominant cause for deterioration of reinforced concrete structures, leading to many premature structural failures. To ensure the safety and serviceability of deteriorated structures, a risk-informed and cost-effective rehabilitation strategy is essential. The intention of the present paper is to develop an optimal strengthening strategy for corrosion-affected reinforced concrete structures strengthened with a widely used fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) technique. In this strategy, the optimum strengthening time and the degree of strengthening-that is, the number of FRP layers-can be determined.
