The classic partial-report procedure was modified to optimize the condition to measure the transient decay of visual sensory memory (VSM, also known as iconic memory). A model was developed to isolate the VSM and visual working memory (VWM) underlying the partial-report performance. The decay of VSM in each subject was well characterized by a single exponential function, thus a lifetime could be defined for VSM decay in individual subjects. It was found that intensive practice with partialreport task prolonged VSM lifetime. This practice effect shows an unexpected adaptive property of VSM and reveals VSM lifetime as a specific dimension for perceptual learning. Clad metals are extensively used for their multi-functionality and their optimal combination of quality and cost. Roll bonding is an effective and economic processing approach to making clad metals. This dissertation presents an experimental investigation of the roll cladding process as well as thermo-mechanical modeling of mechanism for roll bonding of clad metals. The objectives of this research are to investigate the bonding mechanism of dissimilar metals in a warm rolling process and to advance the knowledge of the roll cladding process. To accomplish the objectives, aluminum 1100 sheet (Al 1100) and stainless steel 304 sheet (SST 304) are bonded by warm rolling under controlled conditions. Introduction: China's New Cooperative Medical Scheme (NCMS) was brought to life in 2003 in response to the deterioration in access to health services in rural areas. Despite its fast expansion, the scheme’s impacts on access to health care have raised growing concerns, in particular regarding whether and to what extent the scheme has reduced inequity in access to health care in rural China. A method is presented for updating the Cholesky factorization of a band symmetric matrix modified by a rank-one matrix which has the same band width. Problems which could involve applications of such a method arise frequently in plasticity and structural optimization where repeated solutions of a band algebraic system with a changing matrix are needed. The Cholesky factorization of a stiffness matrix can be updated after modifying a local stiffness matrix which can be written as a sum of a few rank-one matrices. The number of operations required for the updating is of the order mn or less, where n is the dimension of the global matrix and m is its half band width (including the diagonal).
The sand hill analogy should have closed the chapter of the limit plastic torsion problem except that there exists no convenient method to evaluate the volume of a general sand hill which gives the limiting torque. Consequently, only a few solutions of practical importance appear in the literature. A finite element method is developed to facilitate accurate and efficient integration of the volume. The method applies to prismatic torsion bars of a general cross-section. Four new solutions are presented for elliptical and grooved circular shafts as well as cracked rectangular and circular shafts.
