Objective: We hypothesize that the personality influences the caregiver’s depression, burden and distress related to BPSD. Subjects and methods: Participants were 105 consecutive patients with dementia and their family caregivers, living at home, attending a Dementia Clinic. A cross-sectional design was used with an applied a structured interview at home. Comprehensive assessments included: personality (NEO-FFI), burden (ZBI), depression (CES-D) and distress related to BPSD (NPI-distress). Statistical Path analysis was used to study the hypothetical causal and mediating effects between independent and criterion variables. Results: Neuroticism increased, whereas extraversion decreased, both caregiver’s depression and burden. Agreeableness was also found to decrease the burden. The personality characteristics only indirectly influenced t...
A dimensão considerada menos preocupante ...
Aim: This research aims at validating an instrument to assess the perception of control over hot flushes, frequent symptoms during menopause. Method: A sample of 243 symptomatic women completed the Perceived Control over Hot Flushes Index, PCoHFI (Reynolds, 1997), two subscales from the Menopause Symptoms’ Severity Inventory, MSSI-38 (Pimenta et al., 2011) to assess perceived loss of control and vasomotor symptoms, as well as a socio-demographic questionnaire. The construct, criterion and external validity, reliability and sensitivity were explored. Results: The exclusion of item 15 is suggested since it presents a negative factorial weight (λ = -.105; p = .134) and only 1.1% of its variance is explained by the construct. The PCoHFI manifested two factors: internal and external control attribution. It does not present convergent validi...
------ ABSTRACT ------ The Maslach Burnout Inventory – Student Survey adpated by Schaufeli, Martinez et al., 2002 from the Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Survey was translated and adapted for Portuguese college students. The psychometric evaluation revealed that the adapted scal...
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of paternal involvement in Portuguese parents of children between 5 and 9 years old, exploring factors of interindividual variability (father´s age, education, socioeconomic status and number of children), as well as the association between father involvement and a number of factors identified in the literature: parental satisfaction, parental stress and marital adjustment. The sample consists of 145 married fathers aged between 28 and 59 years (M = 40.14), most of them with a high and college degree of education and a middle socioeconomic status. Data collection was based on self-report assessment scales, along with a questionnaire for socio-demographic characterization. The main results point to a relatively high degree of paternal involvement, particularly in the dimensions Care a...
College student burnout has been assessed mainly with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). However, the construct’s definition and measurement with MBI has drawn several criticisms and new inventories have been suggested for the evaluation of the syndrome. A redefinition of the construct of student burnout is proposed by means of a structural equation model, reflecting burnout as a second order factor defined by factors from the MBI–Student Survey (MBI–SS); the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (CBI–SS) and the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory– Student Survey (OLBI–SS). Standardized regression weights from Burnout to Exhaustion and Cynicism from the MBI–SS scale, Personal Burnout and Studies Related Burnout from the CBI, and Exhaustion and Disengagement from OLBI, show that these factors are strong manifestations of students’ burn...
Objective: The aimof this study was to evaluate parental concerns in general parenting. Methods: The participants were 3842 parents of children between 3 and 10 years old, attending public preschools and primary schools, from a stratified random sample of Portuguese parents. Parents completed a parental concerns’ scale that comprises five subscales: family and school problems; eating, sleep and physical complaints; preparation; fears; and negative behaviours. Results: The results reported that 93.4 per cent of parents expressed some concern about the issues presented in the scale. Comparative analysis reported significant differences between mothers and fathers; child’s gender; child’s schooling level; mothers’ and fathers’ level of education, age at childbirth, marital status, and employment status. Conclusions: These results may indic...
ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the Portuguese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory for students (MBI-SS), and investigate its reliability, validity and cross-cultural invariance. METHODS: The face validity involved the participation of a multidisciplinary team. Content validity was performed. The Portuguese version was completed in 2009, on the internet, by 958 Brazilian and 556 Portuguese university students from the urban area. Confi rmatory factor analysis was carried out using as fi t indices: the 2/df, the Comparative Fit Index (CFI), the Goodness of Fit Index (GFI) and the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA). To verify the stability of the factor solution according to the original English version, crossvalidation was performed in 2/3 of the total sample and replicated in the remain...
