Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on several Tl filled skutterudites (Tl0.5Co3.5Fe0.5Sb12, Tl0.8Co3FeSb12, and Tl0.8Co4Sb11Sn) all show a sharp peak in the vibrational density of states at 57 +/- 2 K, which is absent in the unfilled skutterudite CoSb3. Heat capacity measurements on Tl0.8Co4Sb11Sn as compared to CoSb3 are consistent with the presence of a localized vibrational mode associated with the "rattling" thallium atoms in this filled skutterudite compound. Both results are well described by a localized Einstein mode model with an Einstein temperature Theta(E) of 53 +/- 1 K. These data provide perhaps the clearest example of local mode behavior in a concentrated metallic system.
Small cartilage defects are frequently treated with debridement or left untreated, predisposing to early onset osteoarthritis. We propose to fill these defects with a cell-free injectable hydrogel comprising dextran-tyramine conjugates (Dex-TA) that can be applied during arthroscopic procedures. In this study, we report on the adhesion mechanism between cartilage and Dex-TA hydrogels and enhancement of cell ingrowth by incorporation of Heparin-tyramine (Hep-TA) conjugates. The enzyme-catalyzed crosslinking reaction of Dex-TA and Hep-TA hydrogels is based on covalent bonding of hydroxyphenyl residues. We report the structural and magnetic properties of a new class of cobaltates with the chemical formula (BaSr)4-xLa2xCo4O15 (x = 0, 0.5 and 1). These compounds crystallize in a hexagonal structure in which cobalt ions are distributed among two distinct crystallographic sites with different oxygen coordination. Three Co-O tetrahedra and one octahedron are linked by shared oxygen atoms to form Co4O15 clusters, which are packed together into a honeycomb-like network. Partial substitution of Sr and/or Ba atoms by La allows one to adjust the degree of Co valence mixing, but all compositions remain subject to a random distribution of charge. Angiogenesis and neo-vascularization are fundamental for the success of clinically relevant- sized tissue engineered (TE) constructs. The next generation of TE constructs relies on providing instructive materials combined with the delivery of angiogenic growth factors and cells to avoid tissue ischemia. Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) signaling contributes to human disease processes, notably inflammatory diseases and cancer. NF-κB has a role in tumorigenesis and tumor growth, as well as promotion of metastases. Mechanisms responsible for abnormal NF-κB activation are not fully elucidated; however, RelA phosphorylation, particularly at serine residues S536 and S276, is critical for RelA function.
