In this paper we describe a detailed study of the wake structures and flow dynamics associated with simulated two-dimensional flows past a circular cylinder that is either stationary or in simple harmonic cross-flow oscillation. Results are examined for Re = 500 and a fixed motion amplitude of y(max)/D = 0.25. The study concentrates on a domain of oscillation frequencies near the natural shedding frequency of the fixed cylinder. In addition to the change in phase of vortex shedding with respect to cylinder motion observed in previous experimental studies, we note a central band of frequencies for which the wake exhibits long-time-scale relaxation oscillator behaviour. A middle-aged man with type 2 diabetes was brought to hospital with a history of loss of consciousness for an unknown period of time. He had refractory hypotension and hypoglycaemia. A magnetic resonance imaging scan showed an infarct in the splenium of the corpus callosum (Figure). The splenial infarct resembled a “boomerang”, which is characteristic.
A Monte Carlo simulation method was used to determine the effect of scattering from turbid water on the polarization of a backscattered beam of laser light. The relationship between the polarization and the type and amount of suspended particulates in the water was investigated.
The unsteady response of a stator blade caused by the interaction of the stator with the wakes of an upstream rotor was investigated. Unsteady pressure distributions were measured using a blade instrumented with a series miniature pressure transducers. The influence of several geometrical and flow parameters - rotor/stator spacing, stator solidity and stator incidence angle - were studied to determine the unsteady response of the stator to these parameters. A major influence on the stator unsteady response is due to the stator solidity. At high solidities the blade-to-blade interference has a larger contribution. While the range of rotor/stator spacings investigated had a minor influence, the effect of stator incidence angle is significant. Forced-convection heat-transfer data have been obtained for water flowing in an electrically heated tube of circular cross section at water pressures of 200 and 2000 pounds per square inch, and temperatures in the nonboiling region, for water velocities ranging between 5 and 25 feet per second. The results indicate that conventional correlations can be used to predict heat-transfer coefficients for water at pressures up to 2000 pounds per square inch and temperatures in the nonboiling region.
