The aim of the study reported in this thesis is. to investigate in a population of apparently healthy middle-aged civil servants, the predictive value for cardiovascular mortality of presumed electrocardiographic indicators of autonomic imbalance. For the sympathetic/parasympathetic balance RR- and PQ-interval lengths were considered as indicators. QT-interval length was taken as a manifestation of the balance between left and right sympathetic innervation. Minor abnormalities in ST-segment level and T-wave amplitude may reflect both kinds of imbalance. however. may also be a consequence of myocardial or epicardial disease. The following questions were studied in relation to these electrocardiographic parameters: Are these parameters separately. at rest or after exercise. associated with the risk of allcause. cardiovascular and coronar...

Background: Historical physical activity (PA) questionnaires assess relationships between past PA and chronic diseases. The 4-Corner’s Historical Physical Activity Questionnaire (HPAQ) was validated in 78 middle-age women. Methods: In 1996 and 1998, women kept PA records (PAR) for four consecutive days while wearing Caltrac accelerometers. In 2001, the same women recalled their past PA levels using the HPAQ. PA levels from the HPAQ were compared to PARs and the Caltrac. Race-adjusted Spearman correlations determined validity. Results: Low to modest correlations existed between PA (min/wk and MET-min/wk) from the HPAQ and PARs for moderate (r = 0.16 and 0.14, respectively), vigorous PA (r = 0.26 and 0.27, respectively; P < 0.05) and moderate-vigorous PA (r = 0.20 and 0.17, respectively). Moderate and moderate-vigorous, but not vigorous ...
This report first surveyed climacteric disorders including their definition and onset mechanism, and then examined the effect of exercise climacteric symptoms with focus on the psychological effect especially from the health psychological viewpoint. It is thought that the onset of climacteric symptoms is triggered by social and psychological stress coupled with the endocrine circumstantial change due to the aging of the ovary. Therefore, a hormone substitution therapy has been considered to be the most effective remedy for climacteric symptoms. However, recently the pursuit of non-pharmacological therapy is begging in earnest including counseling and improvement of life habits. Exercise is effective in the prevention and reduction of heart disease and osteoporosis, but its influence on climacteric symptoms is yet unknown as with it...
A case of bilateral spermatocele is reported. A 46-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of bilateral scrotal swelling. We obtained a colorless, opalescent fluid which contained numerous spermatozoa. The fluid volume, pH and gravity obtained from right spermatocele were 85 ml, 6.8 and 1.005, respectively, and those obtained from left side were 40 ml, 6.8 and 1.006, respectively. Spermatocelectomy was done under lumbal anesthesia. Both spematocele were found near the body of the epididymis. The wall of spermatocele had on epithelial lining of cuboidal cells. Twenty two cases of spermatocele reported in Japan since 1951 are reviewed.
