This paper will discuss the ancient Chinese thinker Mengzi’s 孟子 (ca. 390-ca. 305 B.C.) thought of human nature. But let us first quote from an increasingly influential modern French thinker: Emmanuel Levinas. The purpose of this citation is two-fold: on the one hand, it is an attempt to form a potentially constructive dialogue between what we will say about Mengzi in this paper and what Levinas has said about man as being inescapably responsible for the other; on the other hand, this citation should also serve to situate our discussion in wider philosophical contexts. We have measured the spectral correlations and intensity statistics of random lasing modes in weakly scattering systems, and compared them to those of the amplified spontaneous emission spikes. Their dramatic differences revealed the distinct physical mechanisms. We find that local excitation of a weakly scattering system may greatly reduce the number of lasing modes even without absorption outside the pumped region. The lasing modes can be very different from the quasimodes of the passive system due to selective amplification of the feedback from the scatterers within the local gain region.
A neural network - based material modeling methodology for engineering materials is developed in this study. With this approach, the complex stress - strain behavior of an engineering material can be captured within the weight structure of a multilayer feedforward neural network trained directly on the stress- strain data obtained from experiments. The feasibility of this approach is verified through constructing neural network-based constitutive models of plain concrete in biaxial stress states and in uniaxial cyclic compression. Since athletes' records can vary greatly depending on air velocities in sports halls, airflow patterns have played a very important role in HVAC design in gymnasiums. HVAC designers and researchers have paid more and more attention to this problem. However, there still remains a lot to do in providing a suitable airflow pattern for competitions, with less energy consumption. Recently the displacement ventilation (DV) system has been adopted in northern Europe. It is used in large spaces such as gymnasiums, but is still not commonly used in China. By using BusinessSoft, we analyzed the airflow, thermal comfort, the effects of ventilation and other parameters on the HVAC in two main zones of the gym, the competition zone and the stands zone. Results indicate that the DV can meet design requirements.
