People of all generations are making more and more use of digital imaging systems in their daily lives. The image content rendered by these digital imaging systems largely differs in perceived quality depending on the system and its applications. To be able to optimize the experience of viewers of this content understanding and modeling perceived image quality is essential. Research on modeling image quality in a full-reference framework – where the original content can be used as a reference – is well established in literature. The variation in solar heating due to the resonance rotation of Mercury produces periodic elastic deformations on the surface of the planet. The thermal stress and strain fields under Mercury's surface are calculated after certain simplifications. It is shown that deformations penetrate to a greater depth than the variation of solar heating, and that the thermal strain on the surface of the planet pulsates with an amplitude of 0.004 and a period of 176 days.
Models of the underthrusting lithosphere are constructed for the calculation of displacement and deflection. First, a mathematical theory is developed that rigorously demonstrates the elastic instability in the decending lithosphere. The theory states that lithospheric thrust beneath island arcs becomes unstable and suffers deflection as the compression increases. Thus, in the neighborhood of the edges where the lithospheric plate plunges into the asthenosphere and mesosphere its shape will be contorted. Next, the lateral displacement is calculated, and it is shown that, before contortion, the plate will thicken and contract at different positions with the variation in thickness following a parabolic profile. An elastic plate model is used to describe the origin of intermediate and deep earthquakes. It is shown that the earth is covered by about eight tectonic plates that have relative motions; along plate boundary lines, one plate thrusting under the other, causes deflection and buckling of the elastic plate structure in regions of maximum curvature that may trigger earthquakes.

A novel no-reference blockiness metric that provides a quantitative measure of blocking annoyance in block-based DCT coding is presented. The metric incorporates properties of the human visual system (HVS) to improve its reliability, while the additional cost introduced by the HVS is minimized to ensure its use for real-time processing. This is mainly achieved by calculating the local pixel-based distortion of the artifact itself, combined with its local visibility by means of a simplified model of visual masking. The overall computation efficiency and metric accuracy is further improved by including a grid detector to identify the exact location of blocking artifacts in a given image.
