The AMERICAN AND CANADIAN SPORT, TRAVEL, AND OUTDOOR SHOW, an annual event in Cleveland, was first held in 1927 at the PUBLIC AUDITORIUM and ran until 1930, when it was discontinued due to the Depression. Commonly referred to as the Sportman's Show, it resumed in 1937 and has taken place every year since then. The original event was the idea of Clevelanders Aaron W. Newman, who ran the show until his death in 1963, and Morris Ackerman, the outdoor writer for the CLEVELAND PRESS. The idea behind the first show in 1927 was to allow manufacturers of outdoor and sports equipment to display their products and to encourage the public's growing interest in the recreational value of the outdoors. The early shows featured exhibits and demonstrations relating to boating, hunting, fishing, and camping, as well as golf, baseball, and tennis gear;...

During the 1940s, it became the first major accounting firm to formally recognize the special needs of the smaller business and to offer specifically designed services for entrepreneurs. Another innovation that contr...
The VIETNAM WAR, an undeclared war in Southeast Asia in which the U.S. was engaged from 5 Aug. 1964 until signing a peace agreement in Jan. 1973, affected Clevelanders much as it did other Americans. As a political issue, the war contributed to ideological polarization and increased cynicism; in its effect on the economy, the war first benefited the city's INDUSTRY, then produced major economic disruptions in the late 1960s and early 1970s. But first and lastingly a human tragedy, the war disrupted, scarred, and ended lives; individuals bore its greatest burdens. The Vietnam War most directly affected those young men eligible for military service. Between 1965-72, about 154,000 men of draft age lived in Cuyahoga County. Local statistics for military service are not available, but from 1970 census figures and percentages derived from na...
The GERMANIA ORCHESTRA, composed entirely of German-American musicians, was active in Cleveland from the late 1860s into the 1880s. The orchestra was apparently established in 1868, perhaps absorbing new members from the ST. CECILIA SOCIETY. John Underner, a piano and vocal teacher, played an important role in creating the Germania Orchestra, but it was FERDINAND PUEHRINGER, an Austrian-born impresario and composer, who made the orchestra a respected member of the musical community. Under Puehringer's management in the 1870s, the standards of the orchestra's performances were raised. It frequently accompanied local choral societies or operatic productions in a variety of locations, including the Academy of Music and Case Hall. Though well-managed, the Germania was without a permanent conductor throughout its history. Puehringer left t...
WOMEN. Tabitha Stiles, who accompanied her husband on MOSES CLEAVELAND's survey expedition, remained on the shores of Lake Erie and was rewarded with a sizable land grant. She was an exception. Women helped tame the wilderness but seldom held title to it. Nor did many women own the homes, stores, and factories that marked the urban landscape in the years that followed. But women nourished and nurtured farmers, laborers, and property owners within the privacy of their homes, and they created their own organizations and institutions to provide individual betterment, social services, and cultural activities. For the first 2 decades, in Cleveland and in the larger WESTERN RESERVE, men built primitive cabins and cleared land for planting. Women--wives, mothers, and daughters--helped plant and harvest, prepared, cooked, and preserved the foo...
The BACH FESTIVAL each year focuses worldwide attention on the Cleveland area through the interpretation and enjoyment of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries. Organized at BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE by DR. ALBERT RIEMENSCHNEIDER and his wife, Selma, the first series of concerts was held 9 June 1933. Expanded to 2 days in 1934, the festival, held in early summer at the college conservatory, featured guest artists appearing with outstanding students and faculty of the college. Exposing Cleveland to rarely heard (until then) works of the Bach canon, Riemenschneider conducted the B Minor Mass (1935-36), the St. John Passion (1937, 1941), the Christmas Oratorio (1938), and the St. Matthew Passion, plus chamber music and motets. With the dedication of the Kulas Memorial Arts Bldg. in 1940, the conservatory gained more roo...
WYSE ADVERTISING, a Cleveland-based agency, was founded by Marcus (Marc) and Lois Wyse in 1951. Born in Cleveland to Czechoslovakian immigrants (see CZECHS) Marc Wyse attended Dartmouth College and Adelbert College of Western Reserve University (see CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY) graduating with a bachelor's degree in English. Lois and Marc got their starts in advertising with the editorial shopping column "Wise Buys," a quarter page feature that ran in the CLEVELAND NEWS and the PLAIN DEALER around 1950. When the Wyse's opened their agency, they were located in the Carnegie Hall Building at 1220 Huron Rd., where they shared a small office with a local artist. After opening the agency, Wyse Advertising secured Stouffer's Frozen Foods (see STOUFFER'S FOODS) as its first client. The firm grew quickly, expanding to eight employees and h...
