This report describes the process of the graduation project of Xu Chen. The project was carried out for Philips Consumer Lifestyle Netherlands on TA2 project and under supervision of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. TA2, Together Anytime, Together Anywhere, is a large integrated multimedia project funded by European Union FP7. The main task of this graduation project is to look into the human factors in ambient intelligence, namely strategic design for “Connected Lobby” on how to enhance family “togetherness” while taking into account of people’s privacy. This thesis focused especially on investigating on the possibility of balancing “togetherness” and “privacy” through computer-mediated communication. A new design approach was explored in the project to guide the strategic product pla...
The study is to give suggestions on future developments of the Eemshaven. The port locates on the north coastline of the Netherlands, opened in 1973 as an indutrial port. It is in the charge of Groningen Seaports in the municipality of Eemsmond. By rail, road and inland waterways, the port connects to the rest of the Netherlands, Germany and other west European countries directly or indirectly. Now most port activities happen in the west part, most of which are shipping and warehousing related. The east part will soon be occupied by four power plants, namely Energy Valley. The construction of Energy Valley is considered as the most important development in the coming five years. The port has been through a rough time. Many nice ideas failed for all kinds of reasons. The developments in the past show that the activities will not be succ...
This project came into being in response to the growing appetite in China for grape wines. Alterego has an expertise business in food & drink, culture and marketing, and it is also eyeing the emerging Chinese market, therefore the mutual understanding between the Chinese and the grape wine needs to be addressed, and this will be accomplished in this project by embedding cultural and economic value into the design and activation of this new grape wine brand for China. Project assignment: The assignment of this project is to create a brand of grape wine from France to China market, and create a brand activation plan for short term. In the long term, the brand concept will act as a guideline in further design, communication and promotion. Research activities: The research defined who the target group is, what to communicate, how and whe...
There is a chance that storm surges occurring in coastal areas cause overtopping over wide crested dikes. The overtopping water results in a hydrodynamic load on the structures built on top of the crest. This is for example the case at the Belgian coast where houses and hotels are constructed on top of the dike crest. In this study, physical model tests were executed on a schematized model scaled 1/30. The aim was to come up with a relationship describing the force on a vertical plane exerted by the overtopping water as a function of wave parameters and geometrical characteristics. Due to time constraints the number of tests had to be restricted so only a limited number of parameters could be varied. Despite these restrictions, the experiments revealed the most important mechanism of the impact process under the two dike configurations...

The increasing concerns about global climate change and rising environmental pressures have prompted countries and cities to explore new sustainable development pattern. The concept of eco-city has been proposed as a potential sustainable urban solution. China as the most populous country in the world, is especially challenged by its rapid urbanization and environmental degradation, and has launched a number of eco-city initiatives in recent years. Among them many are eye-catching bilateral collaboration projects with the engagement of international partners. The growing trend of Sino-foreign eco-city initiatives give rise to the main research question of this study: “What is the role of bilateral collaborations in Chinese eco-city development?” This question is further divided into three sub-questions, among which the first sub-quest...
In an age dominated by the worldview of capitalist globalism, it takes courage and stamina to continue arguing for the relevance of socialism as both a theory and social practice. Yet Lin Chun’s book is exceptional not merely because it defies the post-Cold War trend of dismissing socialism/communism as a failed shortcut or long detour to capitalism. It is significant, more importantly, because of its penetrating and compelling exposition of why Chinese socialism has survived the post-communist world. Emerging from her in-depth analysis is also a clear and straightforward message: the continued marginalisation of socialism in China’s political discourse, economic agendas and social interactions, rather than incomplete market transition as many argue, is answerable to most problems encountered in the reform. Lin Chun’s diagnostic reason...
