We present an evaluation of the European Data Grid software in the framework of the BaBar experiment. Two kinds of applications have been considered: first, a typical data analysis on real data producing physics n-tuples, and second, a distributed Monte-Carlo production on a computational grid. Both applications will be crucial in a near future in order to make an optimal use of the distributed computing resources available throughout the collaboration.
The BaBar experiment has been taking data since 1999. In 2001 the computing group started to evaluate the possibility to evolve toward a distributed computing model in a grid environment. We built a prototype system, based on the European Data Grid (EDG), to submit full-scale analysis and Monte Carlo simulation jobs. Computing elements, storage elements, and worker nodes have been installed at SLAC and at various European sites. A BaBar virtual organization (VO) and a test replica catalog (RC) are maintained in Manchester, U.K., and the experiment is using three EDG testbed resource brokers in the U.K. and in Italy. First analysis tests were performed under the assumption that a standard BaBar software release was available at the grid target sites, using RC to register information about the executable and the produced n-tuples. This report contains the results of the Workshop on the CKM Unitarity Triangle, held at CERN on 13-16 February 2002 to study the determination of the CKM matrix from the available data of K, D, and B physics. This is a coherent document with chapters covering the determination of CKM elements from tree level decays and K and B meson mixing and the global fits of the unitarity triangle parameters. The impact of future measurements is also discussed.
This article reports world averages of measurements of b-hadron, c-hadron, and tau-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) using results available through the end of 2011. In some cases results available in the early part of 2012 are included. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, CP violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays and CKM matrix elements.
